The pictures of the failed UCA look to me as if it has been butt welded?? I'm no chrome-moly expert but surely with these, and especially non-gussetted items, the tube should go through a hole in the radius (ie in about 1/4 inch into the ball joint cavity) and welded all around from the inside...
