Go read the advice on slantsix.org. there's some good threads there on it. Opinions vary all over, but there's explanations on why cold or warm not running is not preferred. Warm and running is so easy compared to what you'd imagine, I don't really see any reason to take any shortcuts.

It's not as hard to do it warm/running as it seems like it would be. It's dirty, but not as dirty as I expected it would be either. I'm talking about the rockers, not the whorehouse, by the way.

OK, fair enough. If you can figure out a way to do it safely and adequately for significantly cheaper and without too much time cost, all the better.

Why take a chance? /6 heads are free. Find another one and pay a few bucks to have it hot tanked.

Final update. Installed new tank and new sending unit today. Problem appears to be fixed. I couldn't believe how corroded and crappy the old sending unit was. It was partially just gone. I'm surprised it worked at all, I shudder to think what sort of crud it was throwing into my new carb...

I suspect the carb too, but I have checked (twice) the carb seal. That's how I found the detached choke pulloff vacuum hose. I just hope I haven't gunked up my new reman carb with s*** because I didn't clean out or change the fuel tank first. I'm kicking myself now for not doing that first, oh...

Assuming you're talking about on the front, if you're making the switch, just go to front disks. That way you get the advantages of disks for the same amount of trouble. It would be silly to do something in between.

When you replaced the soft fuel hoses, the one at the front and the one underneath coming off the sending unit, did you use injector hose or just regular old fuel line? Use injector hose, because the ethanol in new gas eats the rubber of fuel line and turns it to jelly. Just throwing this out...

Yes, of course good point. Reading between the lines though, the question was really about the distributor cap fit, and they all use the same cap/rotor so far as I know. At least nowadays they all come back with the same part #'s whether electronic ignition or points distributor.

Yeah, I have one I can barely fit on at all, and another that fits so loose I don't trust it. The one I have on there now is an Accel. Not saying I recommend the Accel necessarily, but it did fit. Better luck going with the "better" brands, but even that's not a guarantee. I know how you feel...

Some caps are just made to different tolerances than others. I have 4 /6 caps here now and they all fit a little different.
