Aluminum big block installed in Sgt. Rock

Sorry, guys. I made the mistake of thinking that since the video was only recently uploaded to youtube.com, it must be new.

Aluminum big block installed in Sgt. Rock

On his PowerNation series, Stacey David just posted a video in which he installs an aluminum big block stroker motor with Indy heads in his project that he called "Sgt. Rock". As always with Stacey, it's a little bit difficult to tell where the show itself stops and the commercials and the...

School me on hemi blocks, please

I heard Tom Cotter mention in one episode of Hagerty Insurance's "The Barn Find Hunter" that an early hemi block included the bell housing as part of the block casting, which made it weigh a lot more than other blocks. I was not aware of this. What is the scoop? Thank you very much.

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

It would be great to do an overhaul if the budget permitted, Rusty, but right now I'm just trying to finish installing insulation and dry wall in my shop, and after that I really want to buy a lift. I only drive the truck around town, anyway. I don't plan to make any long trips in it. The oil...

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

Done, Del. I also took the opportunity to braze the dipstick tube back onto the pan because it had come loose. Used my Jet Fluxer: Have you ever heard of a Jet Fluxer?

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

Really good suggestion, Neil. After 40 years the pushrods need to be replaced to make sure the valves are opening properly.

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

treblig wrote: "What made you decide to remove the timing cover???" It died suddenly while driving, and would not re-start. Spark was good, as was fuel delivery. Backfired through the carb when cranking, and there was a lot of lost motion in the distributor shaft when rotating the crankshaft...

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

This old 440 in my D-300 Adventurer SE has been back together for some time now with a new timing set, and is running like a champ! It's a '78 model, and the heads have never been removed.

    Engine Stamp Pad Questions

matthon, let me toss this out there, even though I'm not an expert, and if I'm wrong then everybody can correct me. The problem I have had with those 8.5:1 engines is that they originally came with open-chamber heads, which worked OK because the compression was low, but when you mill the head...

I suppose a ThermoQuad would be out of the question.

Hagerty Insurance Firepower V8 rebuild time-lapse video

I did a forum search for this, but didn't find anything, so I thought I'd point out the link: It seemed to me that the castings on that early BB were the same, or at least pretty similar, to those on my end-of-production 440. The production code on the block of my late 440 is: 8T 440 E...

Need more help re: 440 conversion from A/C to non-A/C V-belt drive

I did install all the brackets, pulleys and bolt sets that I got from 440 Source, but I must be doing something wrong with the P/S pump. First let me say that the way the Chrysler engineers set up the V-belt drive on the non-A/C 440 was pretty slick. The two grooves on the crank pulley are of...

Need more help re: 440 conversion from A/C to non-A/C V-belt drive

You guys probably already knew this, but I discovered that you have to switch both the power steering pump and the alternator mounting brackets to the non-A/C type in order to obtain the correct pulley alignment. This in turn requires a non-A/C water pump pulley because the water pump pulley...

Need more help re: 440 conversion from A/C to non-A/C V-belt drive

Hello, everyone. I am sorry to have to ask your help again concerning the reassembly of the 440 in my '78 D300. I bought and installed the non-A/C brackets for the P/S pump and mounted the pump. I have a 4-groove front pulley. The P/S pump pulley wants to run in the second engine pulley...

2 quick questions re: 440 reassembly

Yes, thanks Jim, I see that now. oldkimmer wrote: "Y don’t u just get the proper p/s bracket?" Yes, you're right, Kim, the old brackets which mounted the A/C and the power steering pump absolutely won't work, so I had to order a new set of non-A/C brackets. Thanks again, everybody.

2 quick questions re: 440 reassembly

Oh, I forgot to mention, both of the nipples go up on top of the water pump housing, where I have them now, but they might be reversed. The front hole in the water pump housing is for an EGR coolant sensor. Do I have the nipples reversed in the picture? So I'm pretty sure I can remove the...

2 quick questions re: 440 reassembly

(If forgot how it came apart!) Does the longer of the two heater hose nipples go toward the inside or the outside of the engine? I'm getting rid of the old R-12 A/C system because it hasn't worked for years and never will again. Will I be able to use one of the mounting brackets for the A/C...

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

Here's the timing gear and chain. When the dot on the crankshaft is at 12 o'clock, the mark on the cam gear is at about 7 o'clock. It looks like it has skipped one tooth. The teeth on the cam gear are almost gone in spots.

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

I was able to verify that the problem was the timing gear and chain by rocking the crankshaft back and forth. There was a lot of lost motion in the distributor shaft. I am going to clean up the front of the engine before pulling the front cover. When I do pull it, I'll take pictures of the...

Necessary to use tool C-3509 when installing new timing set?

The factory seemed to think it was important because they put it in bold print, but I'm afraid I don't understand what would happen if the camshaft did contact the welch plug in the rear of the block. Would somebody please clue me in? So if it is necessary to hold the camshaft forward when...

    Which double-roller timing set for a '78 lo-compression motor?

Pardon me if this is dumb, guys, but here's a picture of Rock Auto's page on their 440 timing sets. Which one do you think would be appropriate for my old engine? I want a steel, double-roller-chain set; nothing fancy, but good quality. Also, what's the deal with 1-bolt vs. 3-bolt cam gears...

My 440 died yesterday, and I would like to avoid throwing parts at it

Crank but no start. It sure sounds like the timing is off when I crank it. It backfires through the carb and kicks back on the starter when I squirt starting fluid into the ThermoQuad. Without the starting fluid it will hardly fire at all. I've got 6.9 volts on the primary of the coil with...

No start on low-compression 440 after sitting on hot day

I hope you guys don't mind if I ask you about a 440 that's not in an A-body. The low-compression 440 that I have in my '78 D-300 dually is original, never rebuilt, but it starts and runs well, hot or cold, EXCEPT when trying to start the truck after it has been sitting in the sun on a hot day...

    Forged piston brand selection

He wants your pistons before boring the block because the clearance has to be held to just about exactly .0025". If tighter, the pistons might seize because forged pistons expand more than cast pistons when they get hot; but if over, you may get piston slap when the engine is cold. The mark of...

Either my oil pressure sender failed or I've lost all oil pressure!

It was a bad oil pressure sender! The engine had plenty of oil pressure (60 lbs. at idle). Scared the hell out of me, though! I wonder why the sender chose this moment to crap out??
