The reverse manual valvebody with trans-brake works fine! 727 and 904's are really easy to rebuild! Done it several times! Kits are around $100... I assume you had the throttle pressure set correctly??

Come to think of it. there is no difference on stock levers. the one on yours may be the lever that come with the shifter. Matter of fact the 727 and 904 use the same valvebody so I can't understand why you can't use one from a 727.

You may want to get you a Yearone catalog. I think I saw one in it! When I get a chance, I will hunt mine down and look.
