Can you ID this manifold ? Look closely …

Maybe it is an old Direct Connection piece from the days of Mopar being really involved with NASCAR and NHRA competition

    Cleaning an aluminum carb

When I started working for Douglas Aircraft Company way back in 1984, we had a HydroHone blast cabinet that used pressurized water and a variety of abrasives. One of the things that I discovered while using and experimenting with it was that I could use just plain pressurized water and remove...

    Cleaning an aluminum carb

I haven’t done it yet but I have some aircraft aluminum polish that I am wanting to try. I figure that I would try hand application of the polish on a cloth followed by a polishing wheel (not rubber backed) on a drill or bench motor to get into the nooks and crannies. As you hinted at, you know...

“What I Learned Today” With Jeff Smith — Ethanol Isn’t The Bad Guy

Class is in. I am your instructor. I have a degree in chemistry and worked in the aerospace industry for 35 years. The two alcohols that you mention will not cause any change to styrofoam. Aromatics will dissolve styrofoam because the styrofoam chemical structure is made using an aromatic based...

One and a half to two wraps of tape is usually sufficient.

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

The lead in gas was in the form of tetraethyl lead (as Mattax previously noted). This compound consisted of four (tetra=four) separate ethyl groups attached to a single lead atom. The lead was present to help the non-hardened valve seats in use at the time. The four ethyl groups contributed to...

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

Well, in my 35 years of experience I did not use BTU as a value for energy since the long accepted scale is called Joules (J). But just to give you an idea of the relative energy content between methanol, ethanol, and gasoline: (MJ=Mega Joules) One liter of ethanol contains 21.1 MJ, a liter of...

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

The quick and easy answer is that you get more energy out of ethanol than you do with methanol. Yes methanol can be made from the things that you mention. As an aside, the addition of ethanol to gasoline by mandate from Congress resulted in more farmland being used for corn production in order...

    Speaking of organic chemistry!!!

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

OK, time for the degreed chemist to chime in. Hydrocarbons are a class of organic materials that contain mostly hydrogen bonded to carbon. Alkanes are a type of hydrocarbon that only contain hydrogen and carbon. Light weight alkane hydrocarbons (methane, ethane, propane, butane) are usually in...

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

Southern California: in the late 1970s I had a built 361 big block in my 64 Dodge Polara 500. As a last gasp effort to keep it using leaded gas I would mix the lower leaded octane with the unleaded higher octane. The alternative was to go buy aviation gasoline because it was still leaded.

What happened to gasoline in the mid 1970s?

I remember that the whole effort was to reduce the emission of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) which was the cause of photochemical smog in major cities. It was found that higher cylinder temperatures resulted in higher amounts of NOx and, by reducing the compression ratio of the cylinder, the...

What's the absolute maximum range of your Duster?

Cruiser, I vaguely remember that the manufacturers would put a gas tank on a car that had the capacity of fuel to give a mileage range between 225-250 minimum. The range would be larger for the more fuel efficient engines when compared to the high performance ones. During the gas crunch we...

What to use to clean this carb?

All of those acids will not clean the metal. They will remove/dissolve the top layer of the metal. I am a chemist and sometimes I use those acids to dissolve metals in order to determine their alloying elements.

What to use to clean this carb?

Merlins, look into hydro honing (now called vapor honing). It can restore the surfaces of old carburetors like the one that you show. It does a great job for what you are wanting. I used one back in the 1990s at my aerospace job. Leanna @CudaChick1968 may have one. Good luck

100 cfm more with anular and downleg boosters can't beat AFR

Well, by adding the annular boosters and the down leg, didn’t you make the Holley function like a Carter? Just add an adjustable air door to the secondary side and you have an AVS or ThermoQuad! (Wink, wink) Nice work Mattax

    Those with Street Demon Carburetors....

Rusty, do you think there is a difference in spring rates between the Demon secondary air door spring and the TQ one? Maybe that would account for the short pedal before the secondaries open?

Welcome to FABO and thanks for the information on the carb. I have been considering buying one of them for my 340 and doing a comparison with two of my ThermoQuads (1971 and 1972).
