    Mine's a 5 hp 20 gallon roll-around that does the job.

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Hit a milestone moment on this yesterday (Tuesday) and that's justification enough for an update on The Progress So Far: Been working pretty steady on lil' Taz when I have the time and while most of it hasn't been photo worthy plenty got done. One of the biggies was replacing the lower control...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

With Gibson shut down for the holidays I get some serious shop time and here's how the year ends. Headliner is in: There's still some shine on there from the heat gun and the sails still need some work-I'll wrap those up when the trim parts are in so I know just how much is exposed. And...

Airbrushed with a Badger 150 and I get Alclad at hobby shops.

Thanks for that. It's far from concours quality but it was never meant to be more than a daily driver. So, to catch up because it's been a while since I did here: The shell is painted, buffed and reassembly is underway (the tail lights are just set in place). Sound deadener is in and I...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

I have both but the OD is going in it. My daily commute is 24 miles down I90 at 80 MPH so anything I can do to make it easier will help. The standard 4 speed can go in when I feel the need to play. The bellhousing is opened up about 3/32" to fit the smaller bearing retainer I picked up for it so...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Thanks all. There is progress but much of it is in support-namely, a blast cabinet I picked up on ebay for refurbishing hardware. It's assembled and I finished last weekend with sealing up the gaps and seams giving it the week to set up. Meanwhile the flooring and carpet is in. Short term goal...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Was reading through the Barn Find 72 340 Duster thread and as I neared the end I noticed the dates didn't really correspond with the posts remaining and was wondering why while not wanting to admit what I already knew... Godspeed Tim and glad your devil found a good home. Had my own mortality...

My First A Body Cluster Restore

I use Silly Putty to mask multi color camouflage schemes on my scale models. You have to work fairly quickly with it as it settles over time and tends to 'flow', but it beats the hell out of masking tape.

And it's back: Clean, buff and magnaflux block. Bore and hone cylinders .030. Installed cam bearings. Line bore crankshaft main journals. Block engine deck. Pressure test block. Complete connecting rod rebuild. Clean and grind crankshaft .010. And, of course, effin' wetsanding continues on...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

For anyone following along, I dropped the block, crank and rods at the machine shop yesterday ( Engine Rebuilding: Bozeman, MT: Engine Machine & Supply, Inc. ) They did the heads for the bike so I'm going with them on this build too. The cleaning process will pit the cylinder walls so boring...

Believe me-I'm grateful to have it. I have the Duster and the Harley as active projects right now and since we're shutting down for 4th of July week to do inventory I'll spend that long weekend replacing the sound system in the Lexus. And I'll have plenty of room. As I posted earlier I have...

BAM!!! Found a motor... Blurry photo of a 7*10*69 340-4. Stamp on the front says FW340P 3006 0193. 3006=Monday, 20 October 1969. Everything but cam & lifters, intake, carb, windage tray and the sleeve for the dip stick. And the best part? STANDARD BORE! A real live, honest-to-god...

Finally getting to it!!! 1970 Duster 340

Small world! My '77 XLCH has been keeping me off working on my '72 Duster 340. Got it in '89 and I'm wrapping up my second restore on it. Took it all the way down to here- And here it is, "finished" (because they're never really finished...): It's the same TX9 as the Duster. After...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Back to the grind-started final sanding with the trunk lid today 'cause I thought it would have the fewest issues and it's pretty easy to get at. Blocked out with 180 and finish sanded with 500. A bit of a high spot up by the back glass but since I never noticed it under the glossy black paint...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Gibson Brands is shut down this week for End Of Fiscal Year Inventory & Plant Maintenance so I get a few days of relatively uninterrupted work on the Duster. Monday was about moving out the last of the trash the previous owners left in the workshop and while I was making trips to the dump...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

I didn't know the "340" went below the body line like that. Dry fitting sheet metal: Not happy with the hood gap. The doors are as far back as they can go and so are the fenders, because if they're not the fenders stick out past the hood on the front. The hood gap is better than 3/8" and...

Hood, dash and bumper filler primed. No damage on the filler but I wanted to get a coating on it to offer some protection from the elements: (fade to black...)

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Long overdue update here. Been working on it; just haven't been talking about it. Fenders primed (Featherfill), tail light panel reprimed: Cut down the original ashtray to fit in the '68 Barracuda dash: Finished the rear axle. Replaced the carrier gasket and bolted it in and replaced...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Got the filler work on the worst of the 2 fenders done so I took a break from sanding bondo today to do some welding. Since I beefed up the shell with US Car Tool subframe connectors, I thought I might as well beef up the front end while I was at it: Both sides are done. The big bracket fit...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

The last step that was holding up filler work on the dash was the stereo. As I mentioned, I had no intentions of using the Barracuda thumbwheel AM radio in this since it's a daily driver and I'll need more than that. And since someone trashed the dash to make the AM radio fit, the place to start...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Bob's a motor guy. He doesn't really care what the car looks like so long as it has a 600HP motor in it. And since that's his thing, it's hard to bash him for it. Still, I think he'll be pleasantly surprised to see this when it's done. Welder came Wednesday and I went on a sidetrip Saturday...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Slugging it out with the bondo work. The left fender is in real nice shape for 47 year old steel. My own-very-own welder is supposed to be here Wednesday so I can cover the side marker light openings and fill the Valiant emblem holes: The right one, on the other hand...: I still need...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Had a break this week from making guitars so I got some progress going on here. Front clip & rallye dash frame, blasted: Other than some surface spotting on the outside, those Valiant parts have no rust issues whatsoever  Nice & clean. Can't say the same for the dash frame...

(so let's see...the bike is done...the furniture building kick I was on is just about wrapped up...what else is going on?) (oh yeah...) And we're back! Yes, I did go on a furniture building kick after I finished up the bike last spring and while it didn't do ol' Black Betty any good, the...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

OH! Back with a long overdue update here. Not a progress report as far as the restoration goes, but I'm home and so is the car. Got a place in Livingston MT and a gig making Gibson acoustics in Bozeman. Went back about a year later, picked the car up and brought it home. That in itself was an...

1972 Duster, 340/4, black on black (the endgame)

Well, it didn't stay black for long ;) Picked up a '70 Valiant a week later that had a much better front clip on it than the one I used. But now I'm kinda back to where I started from, in a couple ways. First-the front clip doesn't match the rest of the car. Not a real big deal as I...
