    Lean Burn

Anyone ever heard of this? I have one bank of cylinders running a lot leaner then the other side. I'm running a Edelbrock 4-barrel with a Weiand dual plane manifold on a 383. The carb had been sitting for a couple years. I've disassembled Holley's a number of times, but never a Edelbrock. Do I...

    Crankcase Vent

It's a 70, with a transplanted 383. Valve covers and air cleaner are after market items. Will use PVC hookup on one side, with a generic, no hose breather on the other side. Hope to fire it off for the first time this week. Howard

    Crankcase Vent

Good info! I'm heading for the autoparts store this morning to pickup hose grommets and PVc valve. Howard

    Crankcase Vent

Looking at some of the engine bays, I've noticed that some of the crankcase vents have a hose attached, and are being routed somewhere down below the engine, (hose to nowhere?). I have not set up venting for my engine yet. Is there something I'm missing?

    383 Starter

Another question, (should have included this in first post): I'm running Shumacher hedders. Hoping there are no clearance issues with these.

    383 Starter

Just dropped a 383 into my 70 Dart. I do not have a starter for it yet. Wondering if I can use a starter from a 318, Dodge Dakota? Would like to install the smaller, high torque starter. Howard

    383 into 70 Dart Swinger

Brought the 383 home yesterday. Well, I guess I got my $200 worth. Pulled the heads, and found three cylinders that had water in them from condensation. The "Dunderhead" that sold me the engine, removed the intake manifold, and did not cover the intake ports. In our climate, thats a very dumb...

    383 into 70 Dart Swinger

I'm going to pick up the 383 tomorrow. I expect to be tearing it down to check the condition of the motor. My wife is gone to montana for three days, so I will be able to move it into the garage during daylight hours, (just kidding). I think the first procurement will be torsion bars, (the pass...

    383 into 70 Dart Swinger

Thanks for the put. I've been itemizing all the info I've found so far. This seems like a fairly do-able thing. Will have to locate a tranny though. I do like the rumble of the big blocks. Howard

    383 into 70 Dart Swinger

The Dart was originally a /6, so the torsion bars are a given. The V8 k-frame is not an original install. Are the motor mounts of the "adapter type", or are they std 383 issue? I'm assuming that the sm & large blk 727 do not have the same bellhousing? I will also be going with an aftermarket...

    383 into 70 Dart Swinger

Hi folks: I have access to a pretty decent 383 for $200. I know this subject has been run up the flagpole before, but, other then suspension and brakes, what other problems might I encounter with a conversion. My 70 Swinger already has a V8 K-frame. Howard

    273 Overheating problem

After you've verified the temp, try running it without the thermostat and see where the temp ends up. Everyone else has about covered everything else. Does the engine have good power? If so it's probably not timing. Good luck Howard

    Flat out crazy

I don't think I ever heard the SRT V10, but specs list them producing 500 HP, with 525 ft/lbs torque,(gulp). My last two trucks were V10's, Dodge & Ford. My latest, the Ford V10, has a nice V8 like exhaust note to it. I always wondered what it would sound like with dual exhaust. Sounds like the...

    340 vs 383

I've never had a car with a big block. My last two rods were sm blk 327, and 351 cleveland, (I realize I'm taking a chance revealing this info on a Mopar forum, but what the hey). I always been impressed when looking into an engine compartment that has a BB, but my best choice looks like the...

    340 vs 383

Well I have never been one to take the easy way out. The 383 is available for $150.00, so I suspect it will need a rebuild. I am on a budget, so will be doing the teardown myself and all machine work will be farmed out. A 340 stroker does sound tempting. I guess I'll go out in the garage today...

    340 vs 383

Just finished welding in the qtr pnls on my 70 Dart and will be turning my attention to the engine. I presently have a tired 340, with a rebuilt 727, hooked to an 8 3/4 rearend. Having access to a 383, I'm at a decision crossroad as which route to take. What entails a 383 conversion, will I gain...

    Correction, very stubron intake gasket

Just a thought. If you make a plate for the carb perch. If you have a chain hoist? Put a little pressure on the manifold by lifting the engine slightly with that plate. Then take a pry bar with a wide flange on it and exert some pressure on the manifold. If you have a buddy, use two pry bars...

    318 vs 340

HI Guys: I found the motor ID stamped in front of the block, drivers side. It's very light, so if your block has a heavy coat of paint, it may not be detectable. Bye the Bye: It's a 340. At least the previous own didn't lie to me about that.

    318 vs 340

Thanks for all the input. I will be pulling the engine in the near term. I,m not up to standing on my head right now trying to look at the numbers. One interesting thing I've found out about the car, is that the firewall has four coats of paint on it, Black, Blue, Magenta, and The original...

    318 vs 340

Just begun work on a 70 Swinger I've garaged for some time. According to my Vin #, it was a slant 6 car. It now has a v8 installed by previous owner. How do I tell whether I'm looking at a 318 or a 340. There must be a code somewhere on the block??? Tnx: Howard C
