yea if i leave the pawl on it, i can remove the pawl (unscrew it from the cable). once the pawl is off the whole assembly turns. I'll work on it tomorrow, thanks for the info.

crazy, the outside knob is loose from the shaft, the black push button is loose from the outside knob, the whole assembly moves up and down inside the shifter shaft, I've pulled like crazy and cannot get it to separate. the set screw is completely removed.

your saying kinda what i'm thinking, and with what your saying i'm starting to believe that it's frozen on the cable. I say this because the pawl that keeps it in gear is unscrewing and falling out. I hope you understand what i'm talking about.
