Failed smog test fuel tank not holding vacum

Smog test on a 1976 car??? How the heck do you get an old car to pass a smog test? Most of the counties here do not do pollution tests at all and when they do its only for cars like 1996 up..

    Electric Fuel Pump Choices???

They are more quiet than most - but still a bit noisey. Mine is noticable until the engine fires off, then I don't hear it....

    Electric Fuel Pump Choices???

I have a Holley HP150. Its a bit loud but the car drowns it out when it's running :) They have an internal bypass so you don't need to run a return line if you don't want to.

    Fuel System Setup

It's all how the system is designed and set up. Depends on how much flow is returning, under what pressure, at what point in the tank it comes in, how tight the tank is to atmosphere etc. OEMs have engineers that design these systems properly. What I was trying to address is what I see alot of...

    Fuel System Setup

You definitely should use a "strainer " before the pump, no tighter than 80 micron, 100 is preferred. Of course a filter after the pump of 40 micron or tighter. Do your self a favor too and install a cut off valve before everything for ease of maintenance down the road. Try to install the pump...

    fuel cell?

A lot depends on what you are doing and what car/motor you have I guess. Having the pump inside of the tank does help to quiet things down quite a bit but as you noted it does cost a lot for the set up. These are some tips that I have picked up for what is is worth. If you are going with a...

    fuel cell?

Spring the extra cash up front for an aluminum over the plastic crap. Get one that has top fittings for both a return line as well as a vent line. Aside from that, size is your choice and I would opt for the less expensive $250 aluminum cells vs the $800 aluminum cells.. Oh yea, make sure the...

    new earl's fuel filter(pic)

I use one of those with the 80 (85?) micron screen on the inlet and a Summit on the outlet with a 40 micron screen. Also installed an Earl shutoff valve at the tank - after the first time I cleaned the filter.....

    power valves

Rule of thumb - take your vacuum at idle and devide it in half. Get the PV that is nearest that value. Round up if necessary. If engine vacuum at idle is 6, half is 3 but PVs only come in 2.5 and 3.5 size so go to 3.5. etc.

    electronic fuel pump???

With a mild build like that why not go back to a mechanical pump? Rule of thumb ... a motor uses about 1 lb/hour of fuel to make 2 hp at WOT. So for 400 hp about 200 lb/hr. At a density of around 6.1 lb/gal that comes out to around 33 gph if my calculations are correct .... What you say - only...

Where To Get High Octane Gas...

There is no issue mixing fuels. Many racers mix fuels to fine tune the octane that works best for their car. However, you should not use a higher octane than your motor is built for. At the very least you are wasting your money, at worse can cause you motor to gum up. I used to mix 110 octane...

    Fuel return line?

Just put a new Holley HP 150 on my car and after talking to their tech people they siad the return was not needed with their pumps. They have an internal recirc system in the pump. I think many other electric pumps are the same these days?

how neccesary is a return line for a electric fuel pump?

Not "needed" for the Holley HP series pumps either as they have an internal bypass. With a bypass, you need to make sure you size your pump to give your motor all the fuel it needs at WOT plus enough recirc flow to keep a recirc flow - ideally a full line volume.

    AN adapter fitting question

If the pump uses 3/8 npt, a 3/8 npt male end from any manufacturer should fit right in with no issue. You may want to consider using some good pipe dope instead of the teflon though. Gas eats teflon in short order. Dope the threads up and run it on in. It won't screw in by hand very far if...

    Fuel Line System

First off, make sure you mount the pump so it's inlet is below the outlet of your cell. If your cell has a sump in it (hopefully) at least try to get the outlet and inlet in line. Use an open pre - filter before the pump, 85 micron minimum - 100 is better. Make sure to have a good post filter...

fuel pump push pull question school me

The top fittings are for return and venting lines, not for outlet. I know of no external electric pump that is designed to suck fuel from the tank (especially without an internal line that goes into the fuel). While all pumps have some suction head to them these pumps are designed to have a...

    Holley Black Fuel Pumps

Having just replaced a Holley HP-150 pump - with another HP 150, let me share some things that I got direct from their Tech people. While the HP differs some from the Black the principles are the same. Yes, install a prefilter - but no tighter than 80 to 100micron. I had an pre filter on my old...

Filter attached to output side of pump?

If your after pump filter is plugging like that then you definitely need one before the pump before it gets trashed - plus you need to figure out what is causing the plugging.

Filter attached to output side of pump?

Nothing says you can't but you won't be protecting your pump at all if its on the upstream side. Plus you would have two filiters - both on the upstream side.

Rule of thumb is half your manifold vacuum at idle - rounded up if needed. 3.5 should be just about right.
