Do I need to re-jet my Thermoquad?

Do you think I should re-jet and re-rod my Thermoquad 6518 (an industrial model with the 1-1/2" primary bores)? Here are the results of two A/F ratio tests. The engine sure seems like it's running too lean, and I'm getting quite a bit of detonation on 91 octane under light-ish acceleration...

Thermoquad low-speed fuel well not filling?

The car doesn't want to start; doesn't want to run at all on the low-speed circuit; when it does run it idles poorly; and the accelerator pump doesn't work. Does this sound like bad primary circuit O-rings to you? The reason I ask is that it seems to me like the low-speed fuel well is not...

I still like my Thermoquads, but....

I'm still emotionally and financially invested in my Thermoquads, but did you ever notice that if your TQ-equipped Mopar sits for awhile, the carb won't work right? The vehicle keeps running out of fuel. It will run fine for a minute or two, then die from lack of fuel, and then start back up...

    Square-bore vs. spread-bore?

Hey guys, what do you think works better: an Edelbrock Performer or Performer RPM spread-bore intake manifold with a spread-bore carb like a Thermoquad, or an Edelbrock Air Gap square-bore manifold with a Quadrajet or the equivalent carb? Why do you think the Air Gap manifold is manufactured...

Maybe I don't know how to install an intake manifold correctly!

Recently I found that the reason my 440 was running so poorly and wouldn't smog was because I had an intake manifold leak. The smog tech discovered it by testing it with a smoke machine. I was the one who had installed the cast iron intake, so obviously I screwed up, but I'm not sure what I...

Old choke thermostat doesn't close the choke butterfly completely

On my Mopars with Thermoquads, the choke butterfly has to close completely before they will start when cold. So when your old choke thermostat stops closing it completely, is there anything you can do to fix it up, or do you just have to shell out the $30 - $50 for a new one?

Not really Steven Stills, Jr.'s head cheerleader

Nor am I the President of his fan club, but man! He sure does a nice job on Thermoquad rebuilds. I've had him do two of them so far, and both came back working perfectly, properly adjusted and they run strong. He sure is OCD. That's what I want in a carb rebuilder. I think Steven is a...

    Idle goes bad on TQ

I seem to have this recurring problem with the TQs on my LA engines, wherein I'll get it running really nice, with a nice idle, and it passes its smog test with flying colors. Then a couple of weeks or a month later it starts dumping too much fuel into the engine at idle, so it idles too fast...

    Another TQ question

I have a TQ on which I recently replaced the fuel bowl with an NOS one. I don't know what main metering jets it came with. I am using the same metering rods as I was using before, so this may well be a mix-n-match situation as far as main metering jets and rods are concerned. The engine runs...

    Thermoquad rebuilt by Holley?

What could I have been thinking when I bought this? It wasn't working right, and upon disassembly I found they had mismatched a throttle plate with the large primary bores and a small-bore fuel bowl! They were probably using up the parts that they had. I've had it sitting on the shelf for too...

Continuing saga of the leaking ThermoQuad fuel bowl

Neither JB Weld plastic glue nor Seal All will hold the fuel bowl wells on for more than a couple of months. After that the ethanol/gas that we have around here either makes them start to leak, or the bowl well will fall completely off. You can always tell when a TQ fuel bowl well has started...

    TQ novice needs more advice

Am I correct that the top picture shows a TQ fuel bowl with an open trough, and the one below it has a closed trough? The dam across the trough doesn't rise up quite as high as the gasket surfaces. Have I got this right? Thanks again.

Don't suppose it's a good idea to mix-'n-match TQ throttle plate and fuel bowl?

Thanks, Demonic, for referring me to Tomco. They look like a cool outfit. I have a 6461S throttle plate. When you look it up on the Tomco catalog: http://www.tomco-inc.com/Catalog/thermalquad.pdf The list shows a 6461S throttle plate takes fuel bowl (Tomco part no.) 8602, which has a closed...

I like my ThermoQuads because I enjoy punishment

What do you guys recommend about the TQ where if you don't drive the vehicle for about a day all the fuel in the bowl evaporates and then you have to crank forever to get it to start? That's really hard on the battery and starter. (I'm using stock mechanical fuel pumps, and hoping I won't have...

Where to buy special plastic epoxy for ThermoQuad fuel bowl?

I discovered that JB Weld plastic epoxies do not stand up to ethanol. Miller Stephenson MS 907, Manley's "Miracle Seal" and Marine Tex's "Seals All" are all supposed to withstand ethanol. I would like to buy any of those three brands, but can't find any retail outlets, and my inquiries to...

I love my ThermoQuads, but one of them has a problem

One of my TQs keeps leaking and dumping fuel into the engine. I'm not a real TQ repair hotshot myself, so I had a known good carb mechanic glue it back together, and it was running pretty well, but apparently it has failed again so maybe he missed something? (FWIW he's got the TQ's on my other...

WTH is this thing that's leaking on the back of my ThermoQuad?

I just got done replacing the timing set on my 440 and when I tried to fire it up, I get a gas leak from this device that is mounted on the back of my TQ. Can anybody please tell me what this device is, what would cause it to leak, and how to correct the leak? Thanks very much.

Off Topic: "Non-A" Mopar polyethylene to steel gas tank conversion

The old poly tank had two vents on its top; one was a 1/4" line that went to the evaporative canister, and the other a 1/2" line going to the filler neck. However, the new steel tank has only one vent on its top. Is it OK (smog legal) to "tee" up the evap and the filler vents? Thanks a lot, guys.

360 with ThermoQuad dies and won't restart when cold

My 360 has a TQ, which has been rebuilt by a pretty good mechanic, FWIW. It starts up OK when cold, but the first time you come to a stop it dies and doesn't want to restart. It is a fuel starvation issue because it starts up fine when you spray some starting fluid down its throat. I noticed...

    ThermoQuad rebuild kit weirdness

NAPA (Echlin) listed three different kits. With the first two I tried, the fuel well O-rings were too small and jiggled around in their bores, but the third kit that I ordered had the correct-sized ones. Some of the TQs must have used different size O-rings (smaller than the ones in mine), I...

Please take pity on me re: ThermoQuad fuel transfer port adjustment

I am having a mechanic who's pretty carb-savvy rebuild my ThermoQuad, because the last time I tried to rebuild one I left a check ball out and it didn't work. Consequently, I have admitted to myself that I don't know my butt from a hole in the ground about ThermoQuads. I told the mechanic that...

    Thermoquad fuel transfer port/butterfly adjustment

Should I be setting the curb idle based on fuel transfer port exposure under the butterfly? How do you then correct the idle speed if it is too fast or too slow when the butterfly is adjusted correctly? Thanks!

ThermoQuad with stuck float from sitting

Just wondering: If you fired up one of your Mopars that has been sitting for awhile, and that is equipped with a ThermoQuad, and found that the float had stuck due to evaporation of the lousy gas we have these days and that the carb bowl is overflowing from the underside of the air horn. Would...

    Can't find 318 TBI injector "O" rings

I live out in the sticks, and am having a hard time finding new injector "O" rings for a 1989 Ramcharger with a 381 TBI; Bosch injectors. Can anybody suggest a good place to order them? I'm not finding them on the internet, either. Or maybe the part number, or the "O" ring's specs and type of...

How similar are the Carter AVS and TQ?

The Carter AVS and ThermoQuad look fairly similar externally, except that the TQ has a phenolic fuel bowl. But how about internally? Are their principles of operation generally the same? Would anyone be so kind as to tell me the major differences between them? Does the AVS have provisions for...

    Suggestions for re-jetting my ThermoQuad?

My 360 has 10.5:1 compression, ported "J" heads, 2.02" intakes, Chrysler "narrow body application" exhaust manifolds, an Edelbrock Performer intake and a Comp Cams cam with 292 degrees of duration at .006 tappet lift and 244 degrees of duration at .05. My carburetor is a ThermoQuad 9094, with...
