Dumb idea or ?????????

I've been wanting a car lift for quite awhile with no way of having a building tall enough to have one.Would like it for basic service - detailing - brakes etc nothing major.I am considering getting one and it would not be inside a building rather ouside on a cement slab next to my shop in a pretty secluded area from the street and yes I live in northern Indiana.I want a standard 2 post nothing else.I have spoke with different companies and they said it would be OK but they suggested putting the motor and hydraulic unit on a cart to keep it out of the weather using quick connects fittings and service it a litlle more often.


SO IS THIS A DUMB IDEA OR WHAT DO YOU THINK?

.............what about rust on cables etc.........prolly still better than not having 1.......kim....

i have known people and even seen shops with them outside. its only a fair weather type of deal depending on where you live. i personally have never had one outdoors , so i cant speak on the effects the elements may have.

They didn't see any problems just keep it serviced gave an example of serveral car dealers use the standard ramp style lifts outside so people can also see the underside of a car with no problems

How about a car port, raised up on something like railroad ties to off set the height increase? Thinkin' out loud, so it may be a silly idea.

I have seen one outside at a local tranny shop here. It's been there for years and still is being used. I was thinking motor home carport. That would give you the headroom and some protection from the elements.

We have lots of shops that have their lifts outside here in Dallas.

You don't even need concrete. I bought a used two post and built an "H" frame out of 2x6" tubing for the base, with two 2x6 tubes running under the center, and 2x2" tubes running up for diagonal support.
