As some of you know I have been working on a '70 Dart that I picked up in New Jersey last June for $2000. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?p=216157 Well, the car ended up having loads of "issues" and I was rethinking my goal of getting it on the track in two years.

As fate would have it I came upon a deal I just couldn't pass up. Last week I found a 440 block and heads on Craigs List for $100. The guy who was selling the block had a '73 Dart in his garage that was 100% media blasted. Inside, out, and underneath. The car is practically a cream puff compared to what I've been working on, so I bought it

All of those months of work on the Sublime '70 will now be put on hold. I will shoot primer over all the bare metal and park it out back until I am finished with the "new" car.

When I started I had a two year goal to get the Dart on the track. At the rate I was going, and with a ton of other "issues" that I have not even begun to tackle, I felt this was the right move.

Not only did I get the car for $500, but it came with a $500 Art Morrison roll cage kit as well. It also has 2x3 subframe connectors welded in. This time the right way.

I will setup the '73 with the '70 front clip and probably the '70 doors too.

Here's some photos. Nothing like having bare metal to work with. There's also nothing like being able to see all the "issues" at once!

Great looking project....but....the trunk pictures brought back memories of alot of cussing, cuts, scratches and burns from replacing my trunk pan and extensions. Keep the pictures coming!

The stock trunk will be replaced with aluminum. I'm going to be running a fuel cell, batteries in the trunk, etc.

If that grey car in the foreground is the '73 A-body you just picked up, it's not a Dart. You bought a Valiant/Scamp.

The '73+ Dart hood didn't cover the radiator/grill since they had a plastic part infront of the hood. The '73+ Scamps/Valiant noses were no where near as pointy as the Dart noses so you're ahead of the game already w/o needing to swap on a '72 and earlier nose.

I want to put my '70 clip on there. It will still bolt right up right?

wow looks like a pretty solid car but yeah what is up with the plates on the firewall good luck with that one. Justin

Whats with the steel plates welded to the fire wall ?

Backing plates for tubing that ties the firewall into the front frame rails. I'm not sure I'll be able to use that setup though since I will be running fenderwell headers. I need to do some mocking up.

That's about 15 hours work for a first timer.

I used a plasma cutter to cut around the floor and a cut off wheel to split the shell in half.

Nice job. I am still thinking of doing a mini tub on my car. but maybe waste of time and funds since mine will be street driven and not the track.

You may not need the extra traction on the street, but the big meaty tires sure look nice under there;)

Yea I know what you mean ab7fh. that is why i am thinking of doing it.

your doing more than ive done on a car body by far. good job so far. its a wheel tub so it doesnt have to be like a c pillar or something that is more outwardly visible. i am getting better at welding myself but far from what you are doing.

what size tires out back are you going with again?

I'm going to be running slicks. I would like to get 30x11.50s under there.

Scored another good deal on Craig's list last night. I picked up a new fiberglass rear bumper and valance for $200.

The bumper is '72 style which is fine, since my first Dart was a '72 and I always liked the 4 light bumper.

Alright!! I've been making progress over the past month. Cleaned the body, primed the body and a bunch of other pieces and started on the bodywork which is done over the epoxy primer.

Time for more pics... Progress has been slow, but steady. With the outdoor temps hovering around 110 every day it's hard to get much done.

Garage cooling scheme:

Swamp cooler to lower the temp...

Exhaust fan to get rid of the humidity generated by the swamp cooler. Also gets rid of fumes and dust. Provides quite a suction in the garage. When used with...

The seal on the top of the garage door which keeps hot air from re-entering the garage. That's nothing, but three heavy duty garbage bags still attached to each other. The bottom is sun screen which allows air to pass through, and blocks the view of the plywood from the front of the house.
