8b184821 68 dart gts 383 block # 2468130

#'s on pad d383
10 19 date code is a LATE 66 block

was given info that early blocks were used when they first started putting 383's in darts
please any info on this block is appreciated THE BLOCK HAS THE BOSSES ON THE FRONT

The D383 indicates a 68 383. I have seen casting dates 2 years or more before final assembly date, so the 66 casting date means very little in this case. One little known fact may help here. MOST 68 engines had the cars entire VIN stamped on top of the bellhousing flange on the block. The only year they did this was 68.

Side note here- A few years back, a guy called me about some Charger parts I was selling for a friend. Mentioned that he was looking for a 68 HEMI engine, and that the engine that came with his 68 HEMI Charger had an early 66 casting date. I asked if he had checked the pad, and he said no. I told him about the 68 only bellhousing flange numbers, and after a few seconds heard a "Holy #uc&". He told me that he had his "incorrect" engine advertised, that a guy was coming that weekend to buy it, and that he just learned it was the NUMBERS MATCHING HEMI for his car! Luckily, the buyer-to-be understood the man's need for it to become "no longer for sale".

The 10/19 code on the pad is actually the assembly date of October 19th. There is no mention in your original post about the casting date on the block, which will be cast into the side of the block. The 2468130 part number is 1959-71 383. The "d" on your pad indicates that this was assembled in 1968, on October 19th. Kindly add the block casting date for us and we'll get to the bottom of this. And as A38 suggested, check the upper bellhousing flange behind the passenger side head for the vin. Geof

thank you both is it possible to look up the sequence# to tell that # was a dart??? and also a plant where the block was assembled??

On the embossed pad behind the passenger side head, you will find the VIN of the car that this motor is from. It could be the complete VIN, or just the partial VIN which may give the year, the plant of manufacture, and the sequential build number. You can also cross reference the plant of manufacture to sdetermine if they built Darts, and if the 383 Darts were assembled at that plant. The sequential build number should match your car if this is the original engine to it. It seems more than coincidental that yours is a 68 383 GTS, and the motor is also a 68...a good start in my book. Check that pad, it may have your answer. Also, please give the casting date of the block for reference!! Geof

Check under the flange ear of the rear of the block and it will have the build date, sequence, and plant number there. I cant remember if it is on the drivers side or passenger.
