Best way to transport engine in pickup

I need to go pick up a 5.9 Magnum about 3 hrs drive with my pickup.
They seller who is a mechanic suggests lay it on a used tire and strap it down.
Is there a simple but better way?
 
That's the easiest.

Put it on a tire, up against the front of the bed and strap it in.
 
I don't know of simpler an better. There are probably better, but the used tire is about as simple as it gets. I have hauled several engines on an old tire and it has always worked well. I hauled one on a wooden stand that crate motors come on and kept having to tighten it down because of vibration. The screws holding it together started pulling out so I stopped in the middle of South Dakota and begged a service station for a junk tire, tipped the engine over onto the tire and tied it down. The engine stayed tight and in place the rest of the trip.
 
Thats as simple as its going to get. I've done the strap/tire thing more times then I can count.
 
Dude, I have a new hobby, built 4 of these things.
Take 2 lengths of 2X8 22" long. Use some other scrap 2X12 maybe 2 feet wide, or whatever for base laying flat,crosswise.
Stand the 2X8 on edge (22" horizontal, 8" vertical) and screw to your cross pieces leaving a 8.5" to 9" gap. Cut some 2X8 triangles at 45 degrees and screw them in as braces between the 2X8 and the base pieces.
Drop oil pan in to long slot, will rest on pan rails.Ratchet ties on all 4 corners of motor.Also easy to unload. Saavy?

Or take a tire and throw it in the back of your truck ,strap it down, stays put,get home , remove engine ,throw tire away, done deal.
 
I have always used a tire.
I hauled a 360 mag last year from erie pa to central wv.
Just put 4 straps on it a go.
A 15 inch truck tire like a 235/75/15 works real good.
 
Thanks for the replies. Just realized I'm an idiot - forgot to ask if the engine's from auto or std tranny application. Called - it's from an auto. I'm planning a 4 speed so I need to determine if this can work.

I know it won't have a proper flywheel but is the crank the same so I can buy a flywheel? Kinda hoping cause its the first low mileage one I've come across for a decent price.
 
This is the 2nd rite of passage for a newbie hot rodder.The first one is spilling atf/engine oil on your first engine pull.

You can get a pilot bushing that fits in the converter register of an auto crank. Not a big deal.
 
:poke::poke:I believe it's a law you have to use a tire.

Thank-you. I've been on the forum long enough to trust your advice so I'll go ahead and will find a flywheel etc for it.

I'll use the tire! LOL

Yes I am just a newb hotrodder but I do know where to get good advice. :blackeye:
