Hi,

Anyone know where I can get a Timing pointer / tab for my 273 motor.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Heres a a pic of the 2 pointers I mentioned the PM. In case someone is reading this and would like to chime in, the shorter one is from a 64 motor and the longer one is from a 66 motor. I believe he is working on a 65 motor. Any suggestions as to which he should use is welcomed, but just know that TDC is in a different place between the 2 units!! Geof

cosig,
Thanks for that great info. I never would have imagined they would have moved the TDC mark. Perhaps it has to do with the sight angle past the alternator bracket, if that changed. That means the mark on 66+ small block dampers must be in a different place. If so, that has probably caused endless confusion. Doesn't affect me since I had to file a custom mark in my 65 damper to match the later timing cover (and water pump) that I installed.

Interesting stuff. When I put my 340 together using the pointer shown on the right, it was 5 degrees off. A few degrees is common but 5 seemed like a lot.

Base timing required for good operation using todays gas wont be anywhere near the OEM scale.
Any reference pointer and a timing tape on the balancer is a better method to the madness.

X2 on the small one,its the same one on my 65 273. & redfish is right on the money about the ":puke:" fuel were forcced to use today & on a 2bbl motor with stock cam 10 btdc is about rite on from what ive noticed, now on my own hi-po 273 with E-4 cam it works best right @ 14 btdc & total 34. & i allways use a dial back timing light too. best thing sence canned beer!
