Been waiting all summer for the local farm stand to open up so I can get some more fresh corn, honey and other produce. They finally opened today!!!

Bad news: The crops are not as hearty as last year due to the excess rain that we've had this year....

The corn is a little small right now, but it will peak in 3-4 weeks and should be nice.

I also stocked up on honey as I ran out a couple of months ago. They get their honey from a local bee keeper, which is good for people who have allergies. By buying honey that is local to your area, it is made from the pollens that are found locally and help your system build up an immunity to the pollens, for those with allergies and hay fever so your reactions are not as severe to the pollens that you are exposed to...

Here's the farm stand:

Here's most of my "take" from this morning; corn, honey, tomatoes, peaches, honey, and green beans:

Here's a dozen corn, shucked and ready to go as soon as the kid gets home from work this afternoon. This was just picked this morning and will be about 6 hours off the stalk when we bite down in it... :D

I love to get fresh produce, as fresh as you can get it, it's better for you when it's fresh.

Plus I like to support my local farmers and vendors to keep the economy going here.

The lady who runs the stand knows me on sight and I get to talk to her and get the latest info on the food for the season. Unfortunately the crops are not as big as they have been in the past due to the rain that we've had here, some of the crops were affected, but they will still be fresh. They pick the food either the night before or usually the morning of the day that they sell it.

Not everything is ready to be picked yet, but it's nice to get what we can as it's available...

No, no, no... LOL!!!

Where are you gonna keep it in a hotel room??? :???:

Got Fridge??? :D

Lol. No fridge.

We have a small cooler we are keeping lunch meat in so we can save on the meals lol three meals out a day for 9 days will kill the wallet Lol.

Mmmm.....sweet corn. It's a bit slow coming this year, but I'm lurking.

We usually buy a bushel or two and blanch it (followed by a cold water bath to stop the cooking process), cut it off the cob and freeze enough in freezer bags for two of us, and we enjoy it all winter. It tastes just as good as the day it was picked the way my wife has got it figured.

They make their own honey there Karl?

BTW you could skip those ice cream stands too. lol

The farm stand gets the honey from a local bee keeper and sells it at their stand.

It's made in Frankfort...

The stand is not far from you Ed, it's on 151st Street between 82nd and 80th ave right near the Orland Park fire station....

What do you pay for 5 lbs. out there?

It used to go for $20 a jar, but this year it went up to $25 for a 5 lb jar...

Still better deal than a local grocery store or Sam's Club...

Sam's Club doesn't offer the big ones any more, now just the half size ones....

I tried to teach my dog to eat the corn right off the cob at the end of last year's season, and he still remembers how to do it this season. He just uses his small front teeth to pick the corn off the cob.

He used to try to bite the whole cob...

They say that you can't teach old dogs new tricks, but he's a 9 1/2 year old Dalmatian, and he learned it...

I need to get a video of it some time...

Thanks for this tip, I'm going to do it next weekend. The farm stand here has fresh picked corn. Today I got some and thanks to Karl's advice, threw it husk and all in the microwave for 6 minutes, came out perfect. Had it with brats and sauerkraut, mmm.

I well remember Mom sending Dad ( at 6 a m, ) and me out for 500 ears! every summer. yes that is one morning worth. she had 2 freezers. sweet corn, butter beans, field peas, ( before auto shellers).... LOL great food!!!!
