So in working on this 72 I noticed the steering column was in need of repair. Some previous attempts to remove the coupler / metal retainer by the previous owner left me some issues to resolve.

So I set out with the idea to remove the column shifter yet retain the factory linkage to the transmission in order to keep the neutral safety switch / back up lights etc... It appears this is going work but I will need to get a little creative when the new shifter gets here - connecting the cable / horizontal rod from the factory setup together at the actuating arm on the 727.

Bearings I used for the shift shaft are a 6805Z (metal shielded) 25mmx37mmx7mm. Bearings are available on Ebay ($4 china specials) or just about any parts store can get a more reputable brand for a little more $$. I had to turn the steering shaft down about .010" for a 2" section in order to get the bearings on and in place. I initally though a 1" shaft collar would be required to keep the bearings in place, but that does not seem to be the case. FYI those spring clips you can buy on ebay to keep the collar retainer and seal in place are a PITA to get installed, but once its on there - you don't have to worry about it coming off!
