Please if any one has any suggestions why my distributor hold down bracket and bolt aren't keeping the distributor from moving. It's almost like there's no hold down at all except from keeping it in the hole. Totally spent on reasons why and ideas

The reason why......because it isnt clamping up on the distributor base. The solution, as mentioned, modify the hold down so it does......

try adding shim(s) under the distributor base, the dist shaft is a few thousandths too long, it needs to have room to spin in the housing without trying to spin the housing as well.

Yea, as jack68gts said make sure its not bottoming out on the drive shaft, a 340 dist will fit in a 440 but will bottom out, the lengths are close. 340 is 3.875", a 400 is 3.500", a 440 is 4.000"

never mind was thinking it was a 440

Big block (ccw) and small block (cw) distributors rotate different directions.

Also make sure the bolt is threaded all the way, could be tightening against where the threads end.
