i have a 64 polara with a 318 poly with a push button 727. For now I'm keeping it that way but the question did arise, if I wanted to switch to a big block, would any 727 work in order to retain the push button and simply hook the linkage set up to it or would I need to source a big block push button? I guess to simplify, is there any differences in the transmissions themselves between non push button 727 and push button ones

To mate with a big block You need a big block 727 to keep the push buttons

Imperial Services will convert (or at least used to, not sure if they're still in business) your push-button controls to operate a '66 & newer transmission, but I think you have to send the shifter assembly to them to do. That said, I bought their 1965 conversion cables (for a column shift) and it took 7 months to get them. I see big block cable shift units for sale occasionally, and I believe all you'd need is a main case if you wanted to do a guts swap. One thing I'm not sure of is whether a '65 case wiil work, as the valve bodies and cables changed. Another option, I suppose, would be the adapter plate & flex-plate spacer that some have used to mount 518s to big blocks?

If you are simple wanting to install a big block in a car with pushbutton trans the cases are different between the 318 and a big block . The bolt pattern from the engine to the transmission case is different . that's the only difference . I f you can get an empty bb pushbutton case and swap everything over you are golden . You can also get a complete bb pushbutton trans and everything should fall in . 1963,1964 and early 1965 pushbutton trans (bb,sb,and slant) have a companion flange on the output shaft for a universal joint . Late 1965 use a slip yoke but retain the pushbuttons . So far , so good . Factory floor shifted use a different system to release PARK . Dash mounted shifters have a lever on the dash to release Park . The linkeage may be different but the tranny's are the same . All modifications and service parts interchange except for the converters . The main shaft in the pushbutton has one less or one more spline , I can't remember which , so a converter from a 1966 and up 727 won't work . There are way around that if you want . Contact A&A Transmissions (Rick Allison) or TSR Racing transmissions (Chris Munroe) . Chris' father wrote the book of 727's , they also MAKE the parts .
