Will a higher stall convertor forestall detonation, if all other factors stay the same? Thank you.

Yes! This is one of my tricks to running high boost on the street. Get the piston speed up before you increase cylinder pressure and there is much less time for detonation to occur. Cam timing events and ignition curve are also critical to making this work although if you are above 3500 stall you may as well lock the timing out.

P.S. Your photo does not represent a piston damaged by detonation, but rather a lean condition that burned a hole in it. Detonation beats up the piston tops, crushes the top ring lands, peppers the sparkplugs, and beats the rod bearings out.

When a purchased a non-running '65 Formula S with a transplanted 318 I found one piston that looked like that. I never knew what had caused a hole in one of the pistons. Thank you.
