Oregon will regrind that core for 89 bucks, or sell you one outright if you don't wanna pay shippin both ways for under 200. You can call Ken and ask him about a good pick for a grind. Just remember if you go with a hydraulic, they take different length pushrods. I would stay solid. JMO.
Exactly! Keep it simple and don't over cam.
 
Any thoughts how a stock two barrel 360 cam would work toward the overall goal?

I ran one in a low-compression 318. I ran it with the 273solids and gear. I liked it.
It was a heck of a lot better than the 340 cam I once ran in a smoggerteen; that was a disaster.

So you ran it with solid lifters and if so did you set it at zero lash to compensate for the lack of clearance ramps?
 
I like the Isky solid cams. They have one with specs almost like the commando cam. That's the one I use for street engines. No need to change anything else when building the engine.
