Hey guys. I know I am not the first one asking for this service and there are many forums, articles, discusions about this. But I have to say that googleing the whole evening made me a bit confused

Anyway, I've got a Slant Six engine with the following numbers on it (pictures).
Can anyone tell me the details to this engine?

You need to look at a different number first. Stamped right under Plug #1 (the one you are showing in the picture). I can make out the digit 4. Clean it up and read the whole number. The number you are showing 2806830... means '68 to mid-'76 RG block (198/225), forged crank. You need to find out if it's a 225 or 198. The first number will tell you that.

Thanks. What I can see is

4/ 198 1595

Or

4/ 198 1505

It's obviously a 198 and the BH you are showing in the other picture means it's one of the better casts, with the forged crank.

The build date is somehow coded in the 1595 or 1505 number and that's not clear.
Do you know what car it came out of ?
It is also very probable that the 4 is 1974 model year (K or 4 = 1974. The 198s were offered from 1970 to 1974).
Is there a dash after the 4 ? Not sure what the / is.
Try to do a little research based on what you know now.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your answer.

It came out of a 1964 Valiant, but this can't be the original one if its really a 198...

I also think the 4 means 1974 but I am confused.

Is there any website where I can decode the numbers on the pad?

I just found infos about the side number (2806830-3)

The photos aren't clear enough. Clean up the stamping pad and report the letters and numbers you find exactly.

That's an interesting nonstandard marking. Perhaps it was originally a service replacement engine. It decodes as follows:

4: 1974 model year
198: This is a 198 cubic inch engine
4595: Engine built on 25 February 1974

Thank you so much!
May I ask you how you found out the infos about the number "4595"
And what about the number "0164" on the block?

4595 is a date on a 10,000-day calendar where 0001 is 29 July 1961.

"0164" is not a useful engine ID number. It would've been for internal factory use.

Can you get a clear photo of the entire number?

Is there a partial VIN on the rear passenger side of the block?
