heres the scoop. my 904 auto in my 72 duster has what appears to be either a leaky shift shaft seal or kick down shaft seal. either way it looks like I have to drop the pan and valve body to swap in new ones.

so I figure, if I am going to drop the trans pan and valve body I might aswell look into a shift kit to toss in while I am right there....some new fluid, filter and pan gasket and be done with it.

im not going to do this right away as im getting the car prepped for primer and paint right now. but I would like to get my ducks in a row and figure out what the plan is ahead of time.

I don't want to get all fancy with this ( full manual, reverse manual ...ect...ect...) and im working with a budget too. The main goal is a little firmer shifts.

I found a few of them on summits site ( not sure which one I would need or what the main differences in them are ....some appear to be the exact same kit....yet have different part numbers.'

anyhow. Ill post the links and if you guys could tell me which ones are worth a crud and why and any tips/advice...id appreciate it, thank you in advance.

Really they are all good. I'd go on each vender website and see the difference (BMM-10225 or ...226 or ...228 ) but as for which brand? I'd say B&M is probably your best choice. TCI is good too. I have a Cheeta full reverse manual valve body and have been with the results. I've never heard how the TransGO one performs so I'd stay away from them. But all in all, you can't really go wrong with any of them.

It's easy to mod the separator plate for more flow and therfore firmer shifts.
It's also easy to up the pump pressure and block the accumulator and change the shift points.
None of this will cost anything but the time to find out how to do it.
That way since your on a "budget" you can put that 60 or so bucks into something else.
I can help you out with the information you need, but I don't have the time right now to get into it.
PM me when you can and I'll keep in touch about it if you want to.

I really like how my car shifts, and it didn't cost me a dime.

I installed a Transgo TF2 shift kit in my 727...
It was shifting pretty bad , and a very drawn out 2-3 shift..
Im very happy with the results.

You will probably find that the TransGo TF2 is recommended more than ten to one over some other shift kit and there is good reason. I put 'em in any tranny I work on.

Tf2 seems to be a popular choice here and other threads ive seen, anyone care to get into detail of why?, what this kit has that makes it the better choice compare to others?. Thanks for the replies so far everyone. I have been searching the forums to ... Just wanted to make a thread about it to get more specific details of what and why versus ththe "what" that most other threads mention

TF2 kit is recommended, mainly due to more "improvements while your there".I've used them all over the years, most are almost identical in mods to plate etc..If your trans hasn't been built in the last couple of decades,I wouldn't touch it! You might force an overhaul.

Good point.
You pretty much gotta do it or don't in some cases, thats for sure.
I just modified the plate, the pressures and the shift timing and it worked out as good as TF2 Transgo install.
That was after an internal chk though.

Another vote for Trans-Go here .

"Gil" , the founder of Trans-Go , engineers his kits for the individual manufacture's transmissions ( 904 , 727 ; TH 400 , TH 350 ; C4 , C6 , FMX , ... ) instead of simply basing his kits on the Turbo Hydro design as everyone else does .
TorqueFlites are very unique --but not esoteric-- in their operation versus T.H's and FoMoCo's transmissions , and as such , deserve an improver for their specific needs .

I'd steer-clear of anything having to do with TCI , unless I had a bag full of dog **** and a lighter , and I lived close to their "facility" .

My stall converter is tci and so far don't have any complaints. However it looks like ill probably go with the tf-2 transgo kit. Seems to win by a land slide by the mopar crowd everywhere i look.

I've installed 10X more trans-go shift kits than all others combined........there are some mods u can do that wont cost u any $, just ur time...........kim.........

That's good . Glad it's working out for you :glasses7: . I've heard mixed- results with their 'converters ; obviously you got a good one . I wish you continued luck with it .

Trans-Go makes only top-notch stuff . I met Gil personally back in the 90's , at his shop in El Monte (Ca.) . It's not open for retail ; you can't just cruise in and buy parts from their manufacturing shop .
One of the dealerships I worked for had an account with Trans-Go . They'd buy certain parts from us , such as Valve Body Separator Plates for the 9C1 4L60E and 4L80E (read : heavy duty police / fleet transmission stuff) for certain kits for the aforementioned transmissions .
Very nice guy .
I'd buy from him based on my personal experiences with him alone !
Although , I bought a TF-2 before I even met him . I got one for the 904 in my '72 Dart back in 1991 , through the suggestion --indeed assertion-- of the guy whom built my Dart's trans .
Never looked back !

Good luck with your ventures :glasses7: .

I am new to all this advanced trans talk.....would someone enlighten me, what is a shift kit???

Separator plate mods by upening up flow to the clutches and bands.
(Transgo kits tell you to do them)
Accumulator blocking as well as replacing the sealing rings on it with D rings. (Trango kits recommend the same)
Changing the mainline pump pressure. (Transgo kits also do this)
Raising the shift points higher in the RPM range. (Transgo kits do this also)

And there is an easy mod that can be done to the governor flyweight to raise the shiftpoints (I don't think Trangso mentions that one though.)

What kind of mods would those be?
