Installing JW ultra bell on A-518 trans

If anyone has seen any of my posts on FABO then you know I've been a flip flopper on alot of things I want to do on the car. The transmission has been the item I've changed my mind the most about. I originally wanted to go for either a Kiesler 600 or a Passon A-855 5-speed but because of cost I'm going with an A-518 O/D trans. I was also considering a 727 but the allure of an O/D to tame down street cruising is too much for me to pass up, especially since I have a 4.57 axle ratio. Here are the pics of me cutting the small block only bell housing off of the A-518 and installing a JW ultra bell in order to be able to mate the trans to my 440 RB motor. As usual the job was more complicated and time consuming than I planned and wound up taking a solid 5 hours to complete. I'm fitting the engine into the car with a 727 bolted onto it, I will get the motor levelled and located, then put a bar across the engine bay and attach some kind of rigging to it to hold the motor in possission and then remove the 727 and go ahead and install the A-518. I'll probly do it similar to the way gdonovan did the A-500 install and avoid hacking the floorboard as much as possible. I put comments with each photo but I can see that alot of the comments are to long to be seen. You can see that there was alot of clearance grinding involved. Obviously the JW bell MUST properly clamp down on the front pump and after I took care of all the various clearance issues I was still able to fit a .002 feeler gauge between the JW and the trans pump which meant that something was wrong. It turned out that the bolts supplied with the JW were just a little too long and were bottoming in the holes. I removed about .050 from the threaded end of each bolt on a belt sander and the problem was solved.
