How to make your own locking gas cap

I created my own locking gas cap by taking out one out the screws around the fill tube and running it from the inside of the trunk out.
To unlock it you will have to open your trunk and unscrew the one screw from the inside to get your cap off.

Once you put the screw through from the inside "finger tight" it will mark the inside of the gas cap for you. Tape a thick washer there and make sure it clears everything, then Epoxy it at that spot.

Or cut a semi circular piece of metal that will fit inside the inside of your stock gas cap around the edge and use the two handle screws on the inside of the cap to attach. Then drill a hole were the locking screw protrudes.


You will want to grind the end of the screw's point off.

You may be able to find a screw at ACE hardware with a wing nut head.

This is effective and it keeps the stock look of your car. I doubt even a car show judge would catch it.
 
around here theres a place called canadian tire that you can get locking gas caps and many other parts cheaply over the counter for an A body, $20 for a locking gas cap. $5 each for new motor mounts

What an awesome idea! I love it. Your description is good, I can picture it clearly in my mind. I'm going to do it...this solves all my problems! I hate the look of locking gas caps but at $100 for a replacement original, I'm always torn....
 
Thanks, trapster. Even I can 'see' what you're describing. This is the kind of info that makes FABO what it is.

If I could only get the cap back that my wife forgot on a pump, it would all be good...:sad7:

This is a good candidate for a 'sticky'.

Now, can y'all tell me how to prevent spilling gas when the tank's full????
 
Yes, but if we could get you to leave a few notches on the inside of the cap, I could use your cap to implement my locking mechanism.

Teamwork , I love it . Let me check it out and see if I can change the program to add a few notches for the screw to grab .....

Sorry, part numbers, please, or it didn't happen. Canadian Tire does not have gas caps for pre-mid-'71 A-bodies, at any price, and hasn't for years.
 
Very nice idea. These early a-body gas caps are a ***** to find too. Even worse when yours is stolen. Not to mention some punk pulling your cap off and dumping sugar, sand, who knows what into your gas tank.
