I learn something new every day.

Today it is that A833's were available in GM trucks in the 80's. I believe they were designated as NP440. Aluminum cased overdrive with GM specific input and output shafts. Some were Mopar pattern, but some were GM pattern mounting flange.

Anybody have any experience with these? Are they usable in A body applications?

They have GM bellhousings, special input shafts, & special output shafts. Basically its modded to use the GM bellhousings, and be the same length and mounting points as a TH350.

So in short, unless you are running a chevy engine, don't even try. The internals like the synchro hubs would be interchangeable though. Most people i've seen call them the NP833

x2...unless you have a bellhousing to run a muncie to mopar, then it wont work

I've always heard them referred to as NP833 also. They are an o/d 4spd with the differences as mentioned above.

GM transmission code MY6. I have one in my truck. The internals are regular A833 OD. The transmission case, input shaft, input bearing retainer, output shaft, tail housing are all GM specific. It does not bolt up to a regular GM bellhousing as it has a hybrid GM/Mopar bellhousing pattern, so it needs a specific bellhousing. Somewhere along the way they made the pattern all GM apparently. The input bearing retainer is a week spot (I spent two months looking for one that wasn't broken). I would say that if you had a regular A-833 and wanted to change the gearing to an OD gear set, you could probably use the internals, but as a complete transmission swap, it won't work.

Is the bearing retainer OD larger on the GM version? If so could it be used on the Mopar version so a GM hydraulic throw out bearing could be utilized?

I ran into one last summer. Some (nice guy too) guy on CL wanted someone to assemble it. He had done the difficult part and ordered new bearings, stop rings and seals LOL. But then some body offered him more than he could refuse for the pickup and he came got it before I could assemble it!! LOL

What was odd about this one (I had never seen) is that IT WAS FOR A BOLT ON TRANSFER in a 4x4!!! Had no idea these boxes ever were set up that way!!! I posted it on here "somewhere"

Here's a photo I found on the 'net

As mentioned above, these girls came (for GM) with either the Mopar bolt pattern or GM

I think they had them earlier than the 80's.

A long time ago, I drove a 1970, 30 series chevy flatbed with one.

It was the easiest big-ish truck to drive. Shifted like "butta".

I think the BH is not too terribly difficult to use, there's a guy with a web page about putting a Mopar 833 OD into a caprice/impala with one of those gm truck bell housings.

Not all of them used special patterns/ bells. I've seen photos of some GM setups that use what appeared to be an unmodified Mopar main case with an adapter plate on the bell. And you used to be able to buy those adapters from places like Advanced Adapters.

I wonder if the overall length of a gm Th350 bell housing and shorter than a standard Mopar 7 3/8?

That would make sense, because this shaft is about 1 inch too short

The bearing retainer is also larger but the snub shaft is smaller which doesn’t make much sense
