95 Cherokee rear discs (pics)

Can the rotors be redrilled for the small bolt pattern? Or is this a big no no?
Would the disc brake setup even fit in a 14 inch rim?
I've never tried it but I was told by 2 members here that there ain't enough space to pull it off.

Sorry man to vague, I want to put an 8 1/4 and wanted to know what may be close to the same length of my 7 1/4. That way I won't have to chop too much. Moving the spring plates is no prob, but I dont want to mess with tube or axle lengths.

,Cliff
The 8.25 axle I took out of a '75 four door Valiant was 3/4" narrower flange to flange than the stock 7.25 axle in my '65 Barracuda. If you can get the 8.25 from an A body you wont have to move the spring perches. With a Mopar offset spring hanger kit and cop car spec rims (15x7 with 4.25 backspace) I was able to get 245-60 x 15 tire in the stock wheel well with no other mods other than moving in the spring perches a bit. Plenty of clearance all around, enough so that I think you could get a 255 tire in there without any rubbing. Of course they are all big bolt pattern so your stuck with that issue (rims, front brakes/spindle).

Not to high jack the thread but If anyone in the Northwest is looking for a complete 8.25 (springs, brakes, axle out of my '74 Duster) I would be willing to let it go.

Introduced in 1969. This rear end will be found in all Darts / Valients from 73 - 76"" quote
Not true. Lots of slant 6 and 318 a-bodies of 73 and up had 7.25 rears.

Looks like the cherokee rear discs went on a heck of a lot simpler than those disc brakes in that other thread. I forget what that donor was.
I want 4 wheel discs that show through at least 16 inch wheels. I dont mind moving the forward spring mount back an inch or so to center the rear wheel well but I do not want to relocate the springs inboard and can't minitub a convertible.
keep up the informative posts . FABO rocks

i have a line on some late model gt mustang rears. i am going to try that route. hopefully i can make the factory gt mounts work.

Looking good.
Couple of whats for ya.
Might just be the angle of the photo, but are your spindles leaning way forward at the top?
And the brake lines look a bit long, make sure the wheel doesn't contact them on a turn.
(Don't ask how I know that could be a problem).

the front suspension is just hanging, car sitting on frame connectors plus I haven't had the suspension aligned, the entire front is new. Gonna check the front lines for clearance after I put some rubber on...

MTANDREWS, am I mistaken or is that the Rev. Gary Davis in your avatar? The pictures a little small and grainy for me to be sure.

Here is some info:

1963-1972-7.25 axle in A-body: 53.200" flange to flange/43.02" leaf
spring or spring perch center-line to center-line/10.09" axle center-line to yoke centerline. These are 4"on 5, or "small" bolt pattern.

1973-1976-8.25 axle in A-body: 51.400" (same as A-body 8.75 housings) flange to flange/43.02" leaf spring or spring perch center-line to center-line/11.69" axle center-line to yoke centerline. These are 4.5"on 5, or "large" bolt pattern.

As you can see, the perch-to-perch measurement allows the 8.25 unit to bolt right into your car, and the flange-to-flange gives even greater tire clearance. Driveline must be shortened. One lives in my '65 Dart just fine. However, the 8 1/4 housing was only a large bolt pattern unit, according to the book that I have; So, since your car is a 1st gen A-body, small bolt pattern car, you will to use custom axles, like YUKON's, to retain your small pattern, or move up to the large pattern. I run '73-'76 A-body discs, so it's not an issue for me.

Related subject: Dakota sure-grips; I'm told that pre'96 Dakota sure-grips will fit into the 8.25 housings. Apparently in '96 they went from 27 to 29 spline,so are no longer compatible with our axles. I'm sure I read an article in Mopar Action about this, but I can't find it. I am about to do a Dart rear end this way, so I will keep you posted. Nice cheap way to get a sure-grip, if it works.

Thanks so much for the info, MT. I am doing a rear end now, & was about to use aftermarket brackets & non-MOPAR calipers. Now I can have a factory unit, & not a mixed bag of parts.

Good job.

Yeah, you know, I looked at the pics in my gallery of my Val's F.E. and it looked about the same. I really should try more coffee n the morning.
Really be careful with the brake hose routing. It can get kinda messy if that tire grabs the hose and tears it up.

@mtandrews,

can you post a list of the parts? This is really cool and we have some of those cars here in Germany. I need to check what is available from local suppliers and what I need to purchase from the US....

A list would be a great help. Thanks....

thanks bro, I'll keep an eye out for that...

every rear brake part, and I mean every rear brake part is from the donor vehicle which in my case was a 1995 Jeep Gran Cherokee 4WD. Even the Cherokee brake hoses and lines fits.
you are talking about the rear setup right?

exactly. rear brakes. rotors, lines, bads shouldn't be a problem. But spash shield, mounting bracket, calipers will be.
How does the emergency brake work? Mechanical?

What else is needed for an 8 3/4 axle (bbp)?

okey dokey. to keep me from getting diarrhea of the mouth (keyboard) because I tend to be "all over the map", give me a lead and I'll run with it...

Hahaha, by all means keep pooping...eeerrr ...typing away!
Great Thread.
THX!

the splash shield and caliper bracket all comes off in one piece. Just source your parts from a 95-99 Gran Cherokee and all will be fine. Parking brake is mechanical. Blue Missile has the parking brake layed out, I'm still jacking with mine. My diff is a 8.25 not a 8.75. Blue Missile has a thread on doing the Cherokee swap to the 8.75.

What wheels are you running with that rear? FMJ body rears can be had for a song, might be a good cheap option for us broke A body guys...

running the steel wheels that came on the source car, 15" steel wheels all around. I have two 17" Torq Thrust knock offs and are waiting to buy two more after the holidays.

Cool. I know the dusters have a little more room for tires than a Valiant. I wonder if this is a viable option for dart/valiant guys? Got any pictures with the wheels on?
