F body 8 1/4 mounted in my 72 Dart - Drivers side -

And an on the back picture up into the well -

Cut off the super hole spring mounts and welded on a new set of standard Mopar Performance seats at 3/4 of an inch inward. Bolted right up. I used an 8 1/4 3.23 (one legger) geared rear out of a Petty Edition 78 Aspen (Jim in AZ hooked me up on this one! $100 for the rear, including 5 BBP 14s with Roller tires.).

It left about 2 to 2.5 inches of clearance to the wheel well lip, and a pretty healthy amount of room (2.5 to 3 inches) between tire and spring. I stuck 205/70/14s on my stock BBP steelies.

Going to have Wheel Vintiques or Stockton Wheel build me a set of 15s that are 8 or 9 inches wide with offset to fill the well in the next 2 years. Wife already had a cow with the BFG TA skins I got.

Absolutely excellent thread, I would like to offer one peice of information, and that is that the Dakota 8.25 rear is a 27 spline axle from 87-91 in 92-96 the axle is a 29 spline. The LSD units for these rear's are for the 29 spline versions.....I gotten this information from many years of building Dakota pickup's..... I love the info you guys have provided here for me to upgrade my 8.75 rear with GC rear brakes..... Much appreciated.

Are you sure?

Everything I have read states that Dodge went to 29 spline in 1997...Even in the Mopars catalogs it is listed 96-down and 97-up for the Mopar LS.

yeah the 97 up was upgraded to deal with the extra"heft" of the Durango.
the size of the ring gear increased somewhat to. More like 8 3/8 than 8 1/4.
too bad a guy couldnt redrill the durango axle to 5 bolt pattern. (I dont know if this is possible).

Can anyone tell me if there is more than one rear that goes in these cherokees? If so does it matter which it comes from? Thanks!

check da thread from the beginning bro! late 94 to 99 diffs work and they are the same. some are limited slip and some are open...

I guess I was wrong about the Dakota information, but everything I've learned from building these trucks always said that in 92 when dodge went to the magnum platform it also changed to the 29 spline 8 1/4. Either way you look at it, this swap is great, and I've completed on my Dakota project.
