I have been looking, but the ones on e-bay seem to be just the housings. I'd like to find one complete so I don't have to tear the thing apart, and what not. I do have a 8 1/4, so the brakes will swap, so I should be good there. I'd just like 3.55 to 3.90 suregrip.

I am LOOKING at a housing right now on e-bay for $300.00 (not including shipping), but then as I say... I'd have to buy everything piece by piece.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I have a houseing and axles ill make you a deal on .also have a 489 case and pos. Unit may let go

Find a C,E,F body cheap and have it narrowed to A-body width. It might just cost you less in the long run(shipping)I bought a complete C-body rear, brakes .489 chunk for $100.Just a thought...worked for me $$$

I've had originals for years, since I've had quite a few 273s, 340s and even a 383 "A" body car. Lately I've had a housing shortened by Mosers to get a big bolt pattern rear with the original track length for the 67 Cuda. I take it you want a big bolt pattern axles. There is no cheap route but when you get there you will be done. The cheapest route is to have a housing cut down and have a set of non-tapered axles shortened. Mine came from a 70's truck, but station wagons also have long axles. The best place to get a center section is here. It takes very little to add a sure grip later if you can't afford one now. Get a center section with the gears you want. It does'nt matter what set, they are all strong. Do it right and do it once...

I buy alot out of junk yards for 100 bucks. Usually 2.76 gears and open, but with some magic it can be a sure grip with whatever gear you desire.

We don't have junk yards up here anymore. Nothing old at least. They crushed everything! :(

craigslist man theres pretty much anything out there. A lot of the times you just need to be in the right place at the right time.

I got one for you send me a P.M. I live up bettween Appleton, and Neenah.

If you're planning on going to big bolt pattern, you're kind of throwing money away buying a complete A Body rear. You said you don't need the brakes, and you aren't going to use the axles.. Basically, that means you need the housing and a third member. It's only 10 nuts to remove the third member, and it's probably something you'd want to do before spending the time and money to put a bunch of un-inspected used junk in your car. Plus, if you buy the third member separately, you get what you want, not some gamble.

Of course, jtkaaa07 says he has something for you. Definitely worth checking into.

Back when I lived in Auburn and was hanging out every day with the Mopar crowd, we would go on like a safari.

Mopar Safari

They taught me how to spot a 8 3/4 and check if it was posi, I could spot a rally wheel at 100 yards.

Here is where we found them.

Cop cars, ambulances, ex-phone company vehicles, ice cream trucks, ex-
Weyerhauser trucks and cars, servis trucks.

What we were on the hunt for was "third members" not so much the whole diff, a good find was a low gear posi.

I found the one in the ice cream truck, low gears.

I didn't find it but I was there,...................

One of those little motorized carts, bench seat, flat bed,... like they use at Boeing or Lockheed,(or Disneyland),

I walked right by it, Kelly Thomas, (Mopar Guru), saw it and recognized it from behind.

Now this thing was short!

But I swear, it had a 8 3/4 third member in it, I also remember it got pulled and used in a local Dart.

I really wanted to get that housing!
it looked just right to me for an econline front engine dragster project.

Empty housing, and in my mind I had already built an entire dragster around it..... LOL

This was around 1981-1982, 1 hr South of Seattle, the Auburn / Kent area.

Major Mopar Area... and with S.I.R. , (Seattle International Raceway), right up on the hill,
life could not be better.

*

Hit all the out in the sticks wrecking yards, pay attention when you are in rural areas, keep eye out for abandoned vehicles.

That Seattle area.... I remember we tried to tow, (with a strap), an early Dart GT that was so rusted out it started coming apart,we pulled to the side to think things over.

I was elected to stay with the car, with no license plates and no windshield, in the rain.

Kelly and Richard went back and got tools, floor jack, jack stands, work light........ yeah, it was dark when they got back.

We took everything of any use off that Dart and left it there on the side of the road.

Kelly paid $100 for that pile just to get the rear end out of it, almost everything else was hammered, even the ash tray was rusty.

When you are driving where you have never been before, keep your eyes open, that is how Kelly found that Dart.

I found a complete Abody 8 3/4 only a block from my house for $300 with a sure grip :)

Found mine on craigslist. It was owned by a major Ford guy who didnt really think much of it. Posted it as a Plymouth Sure-Lock... $200 and a 2 hour drive later and I had it! :)

I answered a craigslist ad... asked where he lived and it was right around the corner!

I found one hiding under a 70 four door Dart just a couple months ago.Car was a base model 318,904 auto and what appeared to be a factory installed 8 3/4 rear with 2.76 open gears along with the correct driveshaft. No trailer tow package,no heavy duty anything, just a regular plain jane 4dr Dart with an 8 3/4.Goes to show it pays to check under any a-body because you just never know.

I bought one from a guy that had pulled it out of a Triumph car. I jut had to knock the crappy hand-made perches off, and it was a stock A Body rear, drum to drum.

What wording do you use to search on Craigslist? I've been checking with no luck at all.

I have heard that the "cone type" is not the one to get because it isn't rebuildable (or not very easily). If I found one cheap enough could the center section just be simply replaced with a clutch type? Thanks!

We found one on Craigslist, one in the junkyard, one came on a parts car, and had one off a '73 B-body narrowed to A-body width. All for reasonable prices. Just gotta hunt and put the word out.

They can be rebuilt, but require some machining.

You can swap in a clutch type.

Craigslist search words I use are mopar, dart, duster, axle, rear, 8.75, etc.

Found mine on craigslist. Lady was upset with her son. Sold every car part he had laying around. Just happened to be an A body 8.75. Snagged it for $75.00

i also have a housing if you cant find one, i'm in the waukesha area ..like the other guys said if u want big bolt pattern no point in buying a complete one & that way you can get the gears and posi you want.
