So I was sandblasting up a small block intake and it uses up pretty much all of the area inside my little cabinet. I bought it last year from Princess Auto on sale. Its frustrating trying to get the whole intake clean, but it sure looks nice. I was thinking about a home made "walk-in" cabinet, but Im not sure if I need one quite that big. I did a google search and came across a couple home made ones that look pretty cool. Heres some pics, if anyone else has pics or ideas post them!

Thanks

I'm in the midst of building an 8-footer because I NEED ONE. I'll be watching this thread with interest. :-D

The freezer idea is kinda interesting ...

I love the old freezer, you can pick them up for close to nadda...get rid of compressor, motor etc. Small ones are about 50-60" wide, which should be good for what I need. Im gonna keep my eyes peeled for one and just swap over the parts I got from my table top.

You don't even have to do that! I get all my gloves, tips, etc., from a place online called TPTools.com. You can get a high-power conversion nozzle kit and everything else you need and keep your little cabinet intact.

One thing you for certain want to do is device an adequate exhaust fan to the outdoors for the cabinet. What you want to do is pull a vacuum on the cabinet to keep sand ouf of the shop. If you get really tricky and provide a ?barrell? for a trap you can recover a lot of media out the vent over time.

Probably want tempered glass instead of plastic window, and divice an easy mount system so you can replace "blasted" windows. Don't forget lighting

I plan on going almost identical with the "freezer", and hook up an outlet for the shop vac. It will help with keeping visibility better. Also those plastic sheets I replace on mine now are not cheap!! Hopefully go with plexiglass 1st and see how it works. HOpefully whatever I am blasting will be far enuf away that I dont haze the plexiglass.

From the old one at the shop I used to work, I think you'll be disappointed in plexiglas or other plastic. It just doesn't take much sand to damage it. Rig up a little frame of angle iron and flat strap or even wood that you can easily take apart, and line with something readily available, say, "camper cap tape." See if your local glass shop does any large amounts of "standard" glass sizes, which may be popular in your area. This way you can easily pop in a replacement.

I've been buying laminate from my glass shop, two thin pieces of raw glass with a sheet of plastic between them for safety. It holds up a LOT longer than plexi or lexan and doesn't get opaque as quickly -- I'd say it lasts 4-5 times as long. They can make them in any size you need.

Thanks Leanna, I will chk that site out!! Hows everything in your world after the tornado??

The damage is pretty bad -- discovered the slab is cracked too -- but the adjuster's supposed to be here this week. Our insurance agent already filed the claim after he was here the other day observing some of the tree cutting and checking out the damage. Thanks for asking. < hug >

Wow slab is cracked too?? What do you think chances are for insurance to cover a new shop?? Sounds like insurance is looking after you.....so far anyway. <mmmmm> LOL

Good thread.
I like the freezer idea a lot, but it does eat some real estate, which I am short on.

My s/b cabinet sits on a shelving unit that is almost 4 feet wide. I can probably use the smallest $hitiest freezer and it would take up about the same space, but allow my much larger pieces. Its worth a shot, I figure a days worth of beer and gigglers and I should have it built. Now just looking for a junk freezer.

Picked up my freezer/cabinet today for nada, so gonna start building today!! A little bigger than what I thought, but bigger cabinet means bigger parts. Should be fun and hopefully cheap!

Ok, I was debating on whether to start a new thread, cuz its gonna be cheap and fairly easy. I figured I would copy what someone else had done in the 1st pic. Freezer is bigger than what I really wanted but it'll work. I propped the back of the freezer up with 2 bricks, and figured the "lean" was good to help keep the sand towards the front(easier to clean and empty). I got my angles I wanted and went and used what 4x4's I had and bought 1 more. The front legs(4x4) are 18" high at the lowest point, and the back legs are around 24" at the lowest point. I screwed the front legs to a bottom plate(2x4) as well as the back legs. I then measured the bottom of the freezer and cut a piece of plywood to match. Screwed the plywood on to the legs. I put "L" brackets at the very front lip of the plywood to help hold the cabinet on there. I will screw some to the back as well to hold it good. Added a 2x4 brace on each side to make sure. I found an old air filter off of a pocket bike and it fits perfect on 1 1/4 ABS, this will be my filter for the shop vac. I drilled a hole in the side for the filter and then Lori came home!! We have to pick the mother in law up Thursday night, so cleaning the truck was in order. I made the damned cradle too tall though. Im not sure where I will put the holes for the gloves. If they go in the top I will need something to step up onto. Or if I put them in the front then my belly gets in the frickin' way!! All thats left is run the air line, hook up lights, 1 1/4 ABS and shop vac, and window. Cant wait to get back at it on the weekend! I loves blasting!!

Very cool 4spd but that angle makes my shoulders and back of my neck hurt just looking at it. :-D Even with the window down low and glove openings on the front, you're going to be looking almost straight down most of the time.

But in the spirit of cooperation and never-ending FABO cheerleaderness :-D, I'll offer up my legendary 8" red platforms for use during the opening ceremonies.
