I think packing it full of steel wool would be fine. Stainless steel wool would be even better (if they make such a thing).

I planned on using steel wool to do this as well. I'd soak the housing in some Evapo-Rust first.

Will do, I was going to use denatured alcohol and wire brush the chit out of it.

I've used steel wool or the stiff plastic panel air filter material (like goes in a furnace) that looks like Scotch-brite and that seems to work ok too, with the advantage of never rusting...... Kind of a pain getting it in and evened out but once it's close it seems to even itself a bit.

soak it over night in vineger and stir it up once in a while. won't need much brushing after that :thumblef:

It seems like that was the kind of matt that was in there becoase it melted  It took me forever to get it out.

it will probably work better than what was there. go for it.

I have heard that before kursplat, even before paining anything galvanized :thumblef:

Stainless this time SS :thumblef:

It's a bit heavier gauge than steel wool, but you should be able to find one of the stainless steel scrubbie pads at the local grocery store. I've never seen anybody rebuild a 710 cap before, but the originals like that are getting harder to find.

Mike, after cleaning your cap up (soak it in vinegar like was mentioned....the acid eats the rust away nicely) and if you find it is not in very good shape due to rust pitting or something....let me know, I think I have one sitting in an old pair of 67 318 covers I have sitting out in my garage.

Thank you Dude :thumblef: This one is in good shape and I have it soaking in Vinegar now.
