I striped out 2 pitmanarm pullers, and my big gear puller won't budge it, I put it in a 25 ton shop press still no go,](*,) any ideals? thanks Mark

I use a Lisle #41970 heavy duty puller and my 1/2" CP impact wrench. The combination of the impact and the hd puller has yet to fail for me. Spray it with PB Blaster and try a little heat on the side of the arm. Theres a lot of surface area with all the splines and when it rusts it can be a bear. Sport

Heat expands metal, so if you heat the pitman arm is should theoretically expand, conversly, you can spray "freeze" (CFC) on the threaded portion while its in your press, prepare for a bang.

Wouldn't that turn the threaded post dangerously brittle?

With enough heat you can move a mountain! thats alot of iron to heat at once,so use oxy. accyleane torch no.5 tip or rosebud.Heat while applying pressure with puller.Leave a full nut on it, helps keep things together when it slides off.Did`nt want to ruin my good puller (to much heat ) Went to harbor freight boughta cheap-o.Try to keep heat evenly, & use no more then it takes. :)

As mentioned: Soak it in pb blaster, liquid wrench, ect. Let it soak for a couple days.
Wire brush the entire area, including the groves. After this it should be ready to pull off. Get a good quality puller, and take your time.

Who said it was rusted? You know he has already soaked it and wire brushed it. He owns aMOPAR so you know he`s smart,'JUST aSTUBBORN ARM PIT!!

I've had a few like that. Tighten it up with the puller. When it won't move,
Rapp it with a 3lb. sledge hammer a couple times. The Rapping will help
loosen it. Tighten the puller up a little more, and hit it again.
After a few times it will start to come off.
Hit it around the other side away from the arm.
Belive it or not. It will come loose.
If all else fails. Heat it and hammer on it.

Use a quality puller. After you get significant pressure on it, whack the puller bolt hard with a BFH. The impact should jar the arm off the shaft. I would not heat the sector shaft! Even if you're not worried about the metalurgy, you're sure to cook the seals. I assume you want to reuse the box.

whacking the bolt on the puller definitely does the trick, just watch how much you crank on it before you whack it. i liek the idea of leaving the nut on but loose. if you have a real good load on the puller when you whack it, it will fly off like a rocket.

Relax Gramps, its just a car site.

Show me where he has soaked it in a penetrating oil, and wire brushed it.

We all know its a stubborn pitman arm.

You see, a member asks for help, we give suggestions, and hopefully one of them works. Thats how this site works. Pretty cool right ?

Hitting the back side of the arm will jarr it better and you won't mess up the
puller.

the last puller i bought was just a cheap one from napa, it actually had instructions right on the package, lol. said to not use an impact gun and to tighten the puller and strike the bolt with a large hammer to free the arm. i used it quite a few times, the bolt is so damn hard it still doesnt have a mark on it. they really do come flying off when they do free up though. im sure striking it on the sides works too, but i would be a little worried about the sector bearings.

This worked really well when I did my rusty crusty off roared abused jeep. Make sure the pulled is forged more likely to survive. Use a 6pt socket on the bolt, 12 will round the he'll out of it and leave the nut threaded on a couple turns, keeps the pitman arm from turning into a distructive UFO when it comes off. Sorry woul have posted this earlier but lost signal for quite a while after the last post.
