I have the chance to buy a 472 Stroker cank fresh from the machine shop for $250. Is this a good price??? I was told he has $400-$500 into the machine work alone. Thanks

Depends. Has it been magnafluxed? Sounds like it must be a stock steel 440 crank for that price. A stock steel 440 crank goes for usually $100 or less.

If the crank journals have been turned down small enough to fit into a 400 block dont bother with it as this method makes the crank weaker.Best way is to align bore the block mains to fit the crank.

What the heck did he pay $4-500 for at the machine shop? Maybe it's been lightened?

Get some more info, and maybe some pics?

Yeah, turning the crank down to 400 main size will weaken it some.

But how much? Relative to what?

Mine has been turned down and has survived over 100 dyno pulls from 620-780 HP with no signs of failure.

Perhaps "weaken" may be relative to the intended usage?

The price is good, if they did a good job.

IQ52,perhaps the uncut crank would last X2 longer. Then again, you'll never know..

the work to fit a rb crank to b block is expensive, ther eis no gettign around it if you want it done right. if you can have it checked out, and its all good, go for it. ive been kicking the idea around of doing a 451, i can pick up a used crank already done, and it has a fresh polish, its a tough decision, by the time you piece it all together, you wont be that much cheaper than a 4.15 kit from 440source.

Here's my #1 reason for using an uncut crank. I would keep it uncut and use billet steel main caps. This combo along with studs is as bulletproof as a stock crank can get. I bet it will live past 7000 all day long too.I havent really decided on rods yet, allthough I've always leaned towards carillo. Those are out of the budget however....

Well my crank is cut to 400 main size, uses the stock main caps with ARP studs, Scat rods and makes regular forays to 770 HP and 7400 rpm. All without the expense of the align boring. Guess we may never know until I push it beyond 800 HP, ahhhh, whoa, no plans to do so....

I mght hit 750 or so max but more likely 650. It's interesting to know that the stock crank has that much integrity!

i'm sure a 472 stroker crank is for a 426 hemi that has a 4.25" stroke and for $250 ij'd be jumpin on it. see if it has 8 bolt holes in the flange. even it it doesn't have them and it's not what i think it is jump it anyway, you'd be nuts not to.

It's for a B block so 470, my bad. I'm really tempted but I probably wouldn't be able to run the 4 speed with the unholy amount of power that it would create which would be a big turn off for me. Maybe make the 470 a stock appearing 383 for one of our Newports :D

They do make ridiculous amounts of power fairly easy! Tons of torque as well. I think of 451/470 as a 440 with really light reciprocating weight.
