I was gonna do a 383 swap but that's not happening anymore

I know I can get 318s out of vans and old trucks and even cars aaaaallll day long. So can someone tell me what it would take to get that in my 73 duster slant six??

I know the mounts are a must. And the v8 tranny... But what about exhaust manifolds? I really can't afford the $600 ones...is there any way to use stock manifolds and clear everything?

Also, will any 318 work? Like from a van for example.

Thanks guys !

I also have a 5.2 magnum in my garage...but I hear this is more of a hassle than just a straight LA 318 swap. True? Or should I use the mag. As my base engine?

use the magnum.it's no more hassle then an la 318.you need mounts radiator. trans,if you use the magnum you need an older 318 timing cover a stub for the cam to be able to use a mechanical fuel pump.

Trans Dapt for the Early Dusters, Schmaucher creative swap has mounts for the later years, AKA the spool mount K-frames, a small block trans, radiator, shortened drive shaft if the rear end is change out from a 7-1/4 to a 8-1/4 or slightly shorter for a 8-3/4, the rear itself is a great idea for an upgrade, shifter if need be.

My swap below.

5.2 magnum 318, or LA318 out of a truck will need a car oilpan and pickup tube
magnum can use the stock serpentine belt and accessories but this will require a bit more fitting and an electric fuel pump, or you can swap on an LA timing cover, water pump, and cam extension for a mechanical fuel pump to use stock A-body accessories with standard fan belts

slant six to V8 will require conversion motor mounts, or a V8 K-frame
stock A-body exhaust manifolds will work on magnum or LA heads and can be had cheep
headers are another option and cheap ones run $119 and up, you can also use magnum van or dakota manifolds if you have manual steering and floor shift auto

a magnum swap also requires a magnum intake manifold as an LA style will not fit
you may also want to think about looking for a 5.9 or 360 same amount of work and a lot more power

So For a magnum... intake, carb, timing cover, and special attachment for a mech fuel pump...and a mech. Fuel pump?

That sounds like allot lol. And doesn't include the mounts and new tranny. And then I need different tranny mounts?

If I get an LA and an old tranny then i dont need to change the tranny mounts?

the exhaust is either a body manifolds or a body headers correct? I have an automatic on the tree and power steering.

where can i get the parts to convert my magnum over?? aaaaand do they make cheap intake manifolds that will work?? or do i have to get a new one?

i know i can get an old 318 and tranny for 400 bucks....do you think i can convert my magnum over and get a tranny for around that much?

sorry for all the indirect noob questions, but when it comes to this stuff i am kind of a newb!! lol sorry

just want to make sure everything is right with it cuz i will only have about 2 days to drop it in. thanks!

u can get a v8 904 trans pretty cheap i got mine for 200 with a shift kit, deep pan and converter

and if i go carbureted with the magnum engine, how would that effect the ignition? can i still run the same distributor and ignition set up??

Try some reading, it'll help a lot.
How to hot rod my S/B MoPar
How to rebuild "............."
The MoPar book called "The Engines Book"

Do a search, I just recently listed all these out.

Your hard pressed for time to do a swap and change the engine around. Just drop in a "LA" series engine and hook it up and go. You might find the shifter on the tree linkage a pain in the ***. I went to a B&M floor shifter for about $100. Just needed a drill and some tie wraps.

and if i go carbureted with the magnum engine, how would that effect the ignition? can i still run the same distributor and ignition set up??

A vacuum advance distributor should be used since the Magnums is not. You'll just have to drop it in and set it up. Set the initial timing and then regulate the vacuum advance. (Allow more or limit it. But, the OOTB condition is normally good to go.)
