Was wondering if this was an option? I have seen parts on E-bay for them, but never in person. Anyone have one, or pictures of it? The parts I saw was for the fan and vent type. I think they made the "web" type that goes on the actual window too. Anyone have one, or parts, or even pictures? Thanks! JOE

No pic's But yes I have seen them.
There is a hole that look's like a specker hole in the middel of the back dash.
And it install's there.
I will look for a pic for ya.

I have seen them. I think it was an aftermarket option, but i'm not positive on that. For whatever reason, it is a great idea since I know that the factory defrost capabilities are pretty lacking! When I picked up my 71 Demon I had to drive it home 65 miles in a heavy rain... I couldn't keep the fog off of the windows! I also learned about leaking firewall seals that night... as the water kept dripping onto my right foot!

I was given a rear window glass from someone cleaning out their garage... it has the electric defrost grids built into it. I had never seen that until the day I got one. The only thing is that I have no idea as to where it gets plugged in to!

Also available were the Sure-Grip differential, hood scoops (Dart, Demon, Demon 340), FM radio, a rear-window defogger (on all models), a manually operated, soft folding sunroof (on the Dart Demon and Demon 340), power steering (using a roller-type pump for greater pressures and more boost), variable-speed wipers, electric washers, tinted glass, and many other options including a variety of radios.

I got this from a history page,You can see [ All models] had a rear-window defogger.
I found this and more at The Valiant family site. no pic yet

Yes, it was an option. I have two extra sets. They were mounted on Abody from 1963 until 1976.

Was a factory option; code H31. My '69 dart came with one and I can't wait to see how well it works. It is a blower setup that bolts into one of the rear speaker holes with a cover (that looks like a speaker cover).

Psst...What the hecks a specker hole???? Wait, don't answer that I don't want to know. LOL

yep, my '74 came with it.......most have been the only option that came with it though !!!

So, the ones you all have seen or have, are the blower and vent type defrosters? Was wondering if the glass could be ordered thru Siemens (or most local windshield replacers) and then run the wireing yourself? I think the "Web type" defroster would be a better setup. It would actually heat the glass to melt the frost or fog. Thanks for the info. JOE

Also, Brian, The window you were given is definately for a duster, demon, or dart right?

Specker hole I don't kmow.What I ment was SPEAKER :toothy7:

the electric type with wires inbedded or placed on the window started in 1973. prior to 1973 it was a fan type that blew air on the back glass.

Thanks 7Demon2. Im narrowing it down now. Was the 73 and later controlled on the dash by a pushbutton switch, rocker type, or toggle? And, if anyone knows, where was it mounted on the dash? Last question- Pictures? Thanks! JOE

i do belive the switch remained in the same location until the end of the a-bodies in 1976. the switch changed in looks somewhat around 73? to a chrome benzel. prior to this it was black with white lettering. this pcture is from a 1973 brochure showing the switch (red arrow) and the electric rear window defroster embedded or placed on the glass. hope this helps some...

So you couldnt of ordered a rear defroster and rear speakers, it was one or the other?

One other quick question I was looking at legendary interiors at the package trays, I see the offer ones with cutouts for speaker and ones without. If you have rear defroster do you have to make the cutout yourself for the vent?

I don't think they all ran through the speaker i had a 73 dart sport with the rear defrost and it was only in the center but my 72 duster had it in the speaker and the center.

The defroster slot is between the speaker grills (cutout) on the package tray.
I had to cut out the slot myself for the defroster when I replaced the tray.
It's straight forward as the slot is already in the steel frame, just trace it and cut with a jigsaw.
Yes it was a factory option (H31).

that is the problem the blower mounted in one of the speaker holes. only the slot for the blowers air is between the speaker cutouts......

My 74 Duster 360 has one but the previous owner installed rear speakers. I still have the blower motor, but would have to remove a speaker to use it. There is still a toggle switch under the dash like the previous post shows

The intake is coming in from the right side speaker, the left side is open for a speaker. Hope this helps.

This is in my 73 dart custom. It didn't come with rear speakers just one in the dash.

My 69 dart with what I believe are factory built boxes for both the dual rear speakers and rear defrost set up

Correct me if I'm wrong. Factory rear speakers were just one speaker and not a pair. The speaker was on the left and the defroster on the right. toolmanmike

i know this post is old....

but couldnt you put a single dc heating element in that steel box controlled by a variable resistor to instantly heat the air going to the rear defroster...like a soldering iron of sorts except run by dc....or a coiled wire from a heat gun stuffed in a small pipe the size of a bic pen made from ceramic or metal

anyone got any ideas on what element to use.....how hot it needs to get to effectively heat the air...how many amps it needs to draw

or make the flexible hose that runs to the plastic duct out of metal and put the element in there

i would like to know how to make my front heater turn faster so my windshield actually gets enough force to be defrosted......more fins? faster motor?...more electricity to the motor?....and then run smaller hoses to the sides of my darts dash to defrost the side windows.....this really is an issue for me. i dont know how they drove these cars back then...you cant see out of them in cold weather
