show and tell! Firm Feel sector shaft brace

-
How is that determined?

Would you get a data logging device, attach it on the bottom of the shaft measuring deflection off center axis / relative to the rest of the car while driving aggressively?

.

you could do something like that. but i would say it is from years off experience wering out lower sector shaft bearings prematurely. have someone turn your steering wheel back and forth with the car off while you watch the box underneath the car,you will see the flex.

I wanted to know if anyone has tried the steering brace on ram truck. I have 2010 ram 2500 and wondered if this is a worthwhile up grade?

i have one of those braces on my '98 2500 ram,i think it helps. for sure over the long haul.

Simple empirical evidence. Have a friend jump in and saw back and forth on the steering wheel. You'll see it move, top side or bottom. I have my reservations about this brace, but my FF K-frame made huge strides in keeping everything solid.

I agree with you reinforcing the K Member will probably do better than this piece will. I am doing a Coil over Conversion right now with a Stock K and the mount that the steering box bolts to is only 3 way boxed from the factory with gaps etc between the metal and crappy welds. I will be 4 way boxing and re-welding just about every part of the K frame to eliminate its flexing just like the Firm Feel unit adding a tow hook to the front of it and a small skid plate.

I have some pictures of the K member, you can see the area of the steering box that I am referring to in these pictures here...

Still I am curious to see your results with this part.

It doesn't move as much play once the vehicle is underway. Bottom line, we need a real steering box, with a real ratio (12:1), 2.5 turns lock to lock like the rest of world. I guess ma mopar underestimated the arm muscles of american people in the 70s...

Roger.. I will have to do this test on mine.. thanks.

Yeah I had one (BD) on my 2003 2500. Seem to work, but strangely I swapped out the steering box with a new one. The og was worn. The sector shaft on the 2500's are just to small for any big tires. I would ad a Carly steering stabilizer as well.

it was sunny out today so i went to my friends house about an hour away to help him with something. when we got done with his stuff we went out on some curvy roads to try to test it out a little. i think it helped some, but the best test will be on the autocross when it is really being pushed to the limit. the fact that my p/s pump is fried didn't help matters much,so i didn't want to push my luck too much in case i lost it. p/s pump repair will be next week i hope. anybody know who makes a kick *** p/s pump? i have a g/m saginaw pump.

If you do order the sanderson headers could you post pictures of the install and comment on how good or bad they fit. I have been thinking of ordering a set also but was hoping to get some feedback first. Thanks Bobby

The factory Saginaw pumps should be fine I was told to drill out the oriface hole at the pressure inlet 1/64" greater than it is stock. I never had issues.

The trick pump is the modern sagnaw pump with the aluminum housing and remote or plastic resivour. You see them in the Circle Track supply places like Speedway Motors.

There's a bunch out there. I didn't have one in mind particular. KRC is one. Sould be fine. I think they offer them with remote and non remote resivours.

i have been planning something like that for a while. i wan't to move my battery to the trunk and then have a custom tank made and run a cooler. does the "modern" pump bolt up the same as the older style saginaw?

now i'm a guinea pig!! lol! they should be here in about two weeks. i have to have them on and the exhaust redone a little before we go to RTTS in jersey. i will try to document it the best i can. i called them before i ordered them to make sure i would'nt have any problems, but you know how that goes.

There is a Mopar bracket kit but IIRC, it just fits a Magnum block? Something about it that one bolt will not fit an old LA style block.

i have a saginaw pump now and i used bouchillon mounts to mount it. i have a magnum crate motor. that the ones you are talking about?

I have one on my c body box manual steering swinger, welded it to the K member, it defiantly made a positive difference.

I installed one of these in the Fall. It tightened up the steering. You get better response. At high speeds the car just feels more stable. Combined with Firm Feel upper control arms and Stage III steering box the car feels like it has rack and pinion steering. I would recommend it if you like the turns.

i already had the arms and the stage III box as well. i can't wait to get her out on the track!

I was talking about a setup like this with an adjuster plate and spacers to the block. Two holes fit, and the third does not. :protest: Notice the extension added to the red plate in the second picture.

This is the Hotchkis Challenger...
