Somethings still not quite right here.

Firstly guys, I'm 100% sure that the Transgo TF2 was put in correctly as the shifts are crisp under light load or part throttle. I also ensured my bands were adjusted correctly.
Due to the 3:91 under light throttle (cruising) she will shift into 2nd about 2200 RPM, drop to about 1700 then shift into 3rd about 2700 RPM.

THE PROBLEM....Took it out a a few harder runs.... and found from part throttle when putting the hammer down she drops into low gear and the car flys but won't up-shift until I back off on the gas???

I tried this in manual as well from a stand still...In first, hard on the hammer-RPMs @ 5500...shift to 2nd and she won't up-shift.

This trans worked well in my son's duster and I thought perhaps it was my kickdown, however I'm sure it's correct as well.

PLEASE CONFIRM for me!
This is how I set it up!

"At the trans", I ensured the kickdown lever itself had full movement, then made sure it was held fully foreward for my upper adjustments! Next, at the carb I adjusted the rod at rest so the rear of the opening sleeve was up against the throttle lever. Once this was completed I push the throttle to the rear WOT and tweaked a tad to ensure "at" WOT the kickdown lever was fully to the rear.:book:

I figured my adjustments were done correctly as I have done it a few times...My thoughts now are perhaps with the new TF2 line pressure, just maybe my kickdown comes on too soon??? or when held at WOT the kickdown fully to the rear won't let it up-shift???

ANYONE!!! :notworth:

Thats odd. Can you get it to shift at all at 1-2? 6k? My tf-2 would do that to me when i put shorter tires on. with my 28s it'll shift when i want, 26s ill shift at 5500 and itll wind to 6k and shift. Govenor must need more mph to make the upshift. Try backing off your kickdown linkage some and see what happens. Your govenor, which is driven by the output shaft, needs to have enough pressure to overcome the throttle valve (kickdown) to make an upshift. Lowering that TV pressure will allow you to not have to as much mph for the governor pressure to overdue the TV.

Goody, I think your on the money here. My wheels are 25.5" with the 3:91!!
When it was in the duster the shifts were bang on "pounded" into gear when shifting. As you asked..1-2 6k "NO" won't shift, it's scary so I have to back off.
So your saying I should try to adjust it so the carb throttle pin "won't" push back on the kickdown right away? or at WOT, it should be to the rear??
Thanks man...

Try and adjust it so that at wot there is a little slack in it. I have a lokar cable on my car, so i dont have much on stock linkages. I'd start with backing it off a decent amout at wot and see where it gets you. adjust it from there to work for the setup.

Thats just where i'd start first!

OK thanks Mike, I'll give it a try and get back to ya if you don't mind?

Jim

Definately dont mind here. I have a 727 book here that includes the install of a tf-2. maybe there is a troubleshoot on it or something. maybe an adjustment somewhere..hmm, lmk!

like mike said.

back off on trhe kickdown some... sounds like it is too far back.. al the way back on the KD leaver is sometimes too much

NOPE!!

Backed the kickdown rod right off. I bet I only have 50% kickdown now at the lever! The throttle pin dosn't even contact the back of the kickdown rod until half throttle and she still won't shift into 2nd or 3rd when the hammer is down and held. It use to shift on demand EZ 3500 - up in the other car. Now, if I pound it to the floor she "will" kickdown, go like stink, but just "stay" in that gear without a shift...(even in manual shifting)...like it got higher then 6000 +. I have to let-up off the gas for a tad for her to shift...(That's so Wrong)!! Couldn't drag at the track like that!!

Everything else is good! It will down shift no problem, and she will up-shift no problem when crusing, like between 2700 - 3000 RPM.

I'm starting to hate "Mo***s. and my fustration point is now peaking! Freaking :bs:

Oh boy

Jim did this problem occur right after you installed the TF-2 kit or did it work correctly for awhile after the kit was installed then act up?

To tell you the truth, Three days ago on a long road I gave it and it would'nt shift?? That how I found out. If you remember back, I found out there was a kit in it already. I just put in some new springs, and a new servo seal. I also ensured the adjustments were correct with the card guage and bit supplied.

I did cleaned the valve body, but took my time in the house ensuring "everything" was replaced as the book stated.

The only differance in the total swap is the differance in rear gears. 3:91 vice 3:23

I thought about what you and Goody said about the govenor speed, but as stated above the only change is the gears if that could do it?? I also read...and haven't tried it yet, but someone said to remove the kickdown lever and go for a spin to see if the gears will change when I boot it. If it then changes, my kickdown valve could be out of wack??????

Jim you can try unhooking the kickdown lever for a try but it should shift since it shifts at low speeds. Your low speed shift rpm's are pretty high also. Usually under light throttle it'll shift by 1500. Do you remember doing the mod where you grind off a little of the throttle pressure rod to make it shorter? If so the only thing I can think of is since there was 2 different kits installed their is a mis-match of springs causing a problem. The 1-2 and 2-3 shift valve springs work in conjunction with the governor for the shift timing. Also the throttle pressure and line pressure all come into play. Kinda like programming a computer. Everything has to be so. At this point I'm not sure if just a governor weight/spring mod would lower the shift points or not. You may have to get a stock valve body and start from scratch. Sorry but that's my best guess.

OK thanks fishy, BTW; I used the same pressure rod! and I replaces 3 springs of the same size and colour. The only thing I can think of was doing the guage adjustments...Oh well.

Ok Jim Im witrh you now! Pretty well irritated! Just took mine out and now you cant even feel it down shift into 1st. It downshifts soooooooooo slow. Along with all the other trans issues.
Hmmmm I must have that new BMW trans that has no shift points! :cwm21:
