Dear metal thief driving a Chevy C10 pickup,
I understand times are tough and people are getting desperate to make ends meet, but theft is probably not the best line of work to look into. I am assuming you needed this giant steel grate to scrap and get some money to put food on the table, in which I am sorry tough times have fallen on you, but you are not alone, many working and non working folks are struggling. If you could please refrain from stealing, I would appreciate it. We are watching and in the future we will contact authorities and local metal scrap yards.

Lol. I'm curious if metal recycle centers have any restrictions like Wire, Grates, Man-hole Covers, etc., or if it is usually an anything-goes operation. Anyone know?

I am a General Foreman for an electrical contracting company. Over the past 10 years or so I have had roughly $250,000 dollars worth of copper wire or steel structures stolen from my jobsites. In the Seattle area the laws are a joke that never get enforced. It is a criminal enterprise run by absolute asshats. If someone showed up at your business with a flatbed truck and 4 BRAND NEW 5000' reels of #2 copper you would naturally think that normal people would recycle it for 40% of what it cost to purchase right? How about pallets of cast iron vault lids, still banded up with WSDOT paperwork hanging from it identifying the job name, contract #, and my contact number for the trucking outfit. Yep, normal people recycle that sht legally right? Then they have the nerve to show up at my office in the field and want a chance at my scraps that I do recycle, which are usually 10-15' chunks, NOT whole spools. If everyone had to wait 7 days for a CHECK mailed to an address, not a PO box, a real physical address, metal theft would not be near the problem that it is.

Several years ago on a signal job for the City of Everett, some jackass took a manhole cover out of the middle of the street, caused a nasty wreck about half hour later when someone drove into the hole left in the street.

The only way to stop it in my opinion is to stop the easy money from the criminals running the recycling outfits.

Wow! Thanks for the reply. I like your idea about the check to a physical address. Here in CA you have to pay a CRV deposit on all cans, bottles etc. when you purchase them. Then, you also have to pay the city for curb-side recycling service as well. But instead of your cans, bottles etc. going to the city recycling program to help cover the costs, you just get vagrants and recycle teams roaming your neighborhood every trash day taking everything of value. It is technically illegal but the cops won't enforce it.

Within 200 yards of a large easement of woodland here filled with homeless "tent cities"" is a recycle center that always has a line of the vagrants and recycle teams every trash day with carts and van loads of resident's recycling. Within 50 yards of the recycling center is, you guessed it, a liquor store. It's a triangle of fail, that does nothing to promote the reusing of resources.

Don't even get me started on Pawn Shops,.....now my blood pressure is up.

The big win that came out this situation is that after having them go in our yard and dig through our bins a few times my wife OK'ed my kegerator purchase to "limit our recycling". I'm saving the Earth one pint at a time.
 
here in Victoria they require Valid picture ID to recycle anything and the guys running the yards get fined and or charged with possession of stolen property if they are caught with the stuff in their yard ,it has cut down on the nonsense quite a bit , the junkies still steal but stuff is recovered more often than not . Except the 1500m of copper that was stolen out of the underground in Langford , they pulled up with an official looking truck ,barricades and HiVis vests and spooled it onto the back of the truck on a weekend , that hasn`t been found so I guess some Electrical Contractor just serviced a new sub-division with a pretty good margin on materials . The locals aren`t that bright in Langford ,you would think someone would question why they were pulling it out of the manhole instead of feeding it in.
 
I know the laws regarding recycling of metal have been stepped up here in Canada. They really had too. In Alberta,there wre theft's like Cannucky posted about. They are bold as brass these trhieves,until they get caught. Then it's some bloody sob story and because our jails are crammed they are let go with a slap to the wrist.

This sort of **** is why I applaud Mr Harper steeping up our criminal laws. All the liberals are whining about it,saying these criminals need to be rehabilitated. Give em to me,I'll rehabilitate em out back behind the wood shed.
 
there are so many steel and copper thefts here in CO springs. thousands and thousands of dollars worth. these people even tear apart street lights and steal the metal along with anything that isnt chained down, and even then they pop locks and take that too. you have to have a valid CO ID to recycle it, but if they know you well enough they dont question what you are bringing in or where you got it from. a true sign of the times and what drug addiction will do to someone needing another sack .
 
Yeah when i was in Windsor they were stealing the brass plaques off the bench's in the city parks , the ones that said "this bench donated by -" and the recycling center was buying them , the smart ones melt it all down so it can't be recognized . I knew a couple of guys who had a pretty good business going in between Mason and Jackson MI there was a pull off from the highway where they were recycling mobile homes , between the copper , the aluminum siding and windows and repainting the trailer frames and selling em back to the manufacturer's in Indiana they had a pretty good thing going , it was the burning of everything else including the insulation on the wire that got them in trouble .
 
Here in Connecticut, the yards take your license, address and phone and put it on file.
