Getting the Barracuda back on the road

Ok, now you are just an animal!!! You get WAY too much stuff done in a short amount of time. You are a great example for the guys that make excuses not to work on their cars.

No I have to hold off for now. This is the time of year that Colorado, Idaho and Wyoming want money for Big Game Draw Tags. Ya gotta have priorities.
 
Tonight I don't have to work and plan on pulling the 273 and getting it on the stand and pull the K member for media blasting and doing the first conversion on an early car. :cheers:
 
Well not very productive last night. I did get the lower radiator support welded in and I also scraped all of the under coating from the drivers side inner fender. It took me like 5 hours to just do that. The good news is once again, no rust wahoo.

Man you work quick, looking good too!

That undercoating can be a serious PITA, I burned most of mine off with a propane torch and a paint scraper, what a mess that stuff is.

You know this undercoating is so old and dried out that some of it scrapes right off no problem. I just hate doing it all at once, makes for a long day.
 
There is a guy on here named johnnyp who lives here in Birmingham,Al and he will have sheet metal for your back end. Nice car! Did someone put front wheel arches on the rear wells?

Thanks for the heads up. The previous owner did weld in front wheel arches. I kind of like it. I have all of the metal fab equip to repair the back quarters and will most likely go that route.

That brings back some ugly memories. Are you going to get really stupid like me and make it look like this?

Yeah, hopefully in the next month it should be on the road.

Pulled the 273 today. Look at how much the little pistons stick out of the hole, should work good for the open 318 heads. There is not even what I would call a lip in the cylinders. I will just clean up the pistons and install the new heads with .028" head gaskets.

What was the original color of that car? I see what looks like Mauve by the blower motor.

You are correct. I don't know the paint color, but it is ugly (sorry if your car is that color). LOL The car is strange because it is a Hipo 273 car that is not a formula S.

After some recent issues on FABO I am reluctant to post, because there are some members out there who know everything, but do nothing. So if you are one of those members then please post somewhere else. This is my car and don't care if you think stock is better and safer. With that being said, I will continue to post here and see how it goes.

Well I took some time to pull the K member the last few days and do some stiffening to the steering box area, idler arm mount and motor mount pads. I put it in the parts washer and scrubbed for about an hour, then the blast cabinet. At some point in the cars life someone thought they were Bo Duke and dented the K member pretty bad in the bottom. Rather than fight the dented area I cut it out and bent some 10ga and and welded it in. I figure the new pad on the bottom will be a good place to go ahead and mount a tow hook too for down the road. I installed the K member about 3 times while welding it to avoid warping it. Even after all of the cleaning I still had old grease coming from everywhere and had to use the mig in a few places. No issues at all and it is dead straight.

I believe the name is Mauve Mist Poly and the code is 661, I think.. My 66 Sport Fury was originally that color. I think it is a cool color not seen very often. You should go back with it. Or at least get a very small amount mixed up and spray a test panel. I think it is a very cool color. And I think your build is awesome, keep up the good work.

Corey I think that you are right on the paint color. I looked it up too and the color is cool, but not very masculine LOL. Maybe on a real restoration, but I'm not the nut and bolt restoration kind of guy. I don't know what the color will be yet, it's really up to the wife, because it's her car.
