How to keep CB magnet mount from scratchin paint?

I was wondering what you guys suggest or use. I am curently using a t shirt roughly cut the shape of the magnet it works but is sort of ugly as it sticks out a little.
 
Try some clear vinyl like they use on "Clear" bras. Make sure the surface is clean, and when you set down or remove, pull straight up.

I used to use felt from a craft or fabric store. I just cut a circle and let the magnet hold it down. I never went over about 50 mph with it though.
 
I saw a Cool little trunk mount that came up through the seam between the Trunk lid and the 1/4. I'm not sure how it attached underneath but no holes were drilled where you could see them. I guess the Cable had to pass over the weather strip but that's no big deal. You could also tap right into your AM or FM radio antenna. You would receive just fine but getting out real far is another story. That requires proper SWR Settings and experimenting with different lengths of cable. As stated above pull straight up when removing magnet mounted ant. They like to slide and scratch paint.

No holes for that type of a mount. It uses small allen head screws which pinch the mount to the trunk lip. The mount has rubber on it so that the paint won't scratch. The only place that paint get's messed up is on the underside of the lip where you want the allen screws to penetrate the paint so you get a good ground.

I have seen mag mounts fall over and scratch the hell out of paint.

how about tradin your CB in for a cell phone.....LOL! ( just kiddin) I used to use that clear film used for protecting paint on vehicles.
 
On the tow trucks the good magnetic lights that go on the towed vehicle have a rubber type boot. A possible solution to duplicate this might be something like this..... Red wouldn't be my color of choice but someone might make it in black. The stuff worked real well on the tools we dipped.

I think if you leave it in the same spot it won't scratch anyway. Then if you hit a low tree it will drag on the car and scratch anyway. If you leave it in the same place long enough it will lift the paint. I would use that type on an old parts getter of something, but use a different type on a nicer car, just to be safe.

Back when CBs were a hot item to be stolen I used to have some dual antennas that folded down in the trunk when they weren't being used. They also had pinch well brackets so there was no holes drilled in the car.
 
When I run one in my roadrunner, I set it on the rear armrest ash tray. Magnet sticks, don't scratch the paint, and you can barly see it form the outside.
 
I just leave mine on.... Must be a "use it or loose it thing"

It comes in all colors they even have a kit to make your own colors. Good suggestion.

Just be careful it is not good around solvents

The local Lowes carries it here.

Thanks, It is great to know that Lowes has it in colors. I have a few nicks in the tow light rubber boots so this will fix the up again.

In my opinion, if you have a GREAT paint job (I don't) you are probably way ahead to scratch (pun intended) the idea of a mag-mount antenna.

For one thing, all you'd have to do is hit one low tree branch or similar problem, and that might just knock the thing off and down the rear/ side of the car.

They don't work all that well, but you CAN get "dual" antennas which replace your automotive car radio antenna. These have a coupler, and are specially built to operate on AM, FM, and CB

I did once have a couple of truck lip mounts that clamp on, but they STILL are capable of marring the paint, and especially if the trunk gap is "tight" vibration/ movement of the trunk lid may result in damage to one side or the other

If you are "handy" and especially if you have a trailer hitch, consider building a removable bracket to attach an antenna coming out from under the bumper. You can buy what is known as a "1/2 wave design" for fiberglass boats which do not need a ground plane.
