Leaking power steering box - NEED Help

My power steering box is leaking and it looks like its right around the seal, I would suspect this is common in older car, both my 1971 Dart and 70 Challenger have this issue. How hard is it to fix? Do I need to pull the entire box out? Is there a rebuild kit? any one have a how to do thread I missed?

I made a post a few years ago w/ photos. Search for my name.

3 seals, if you count the sector shaft top. All seals can be replaced in-car. The lower seal most commonly leaks. One member said the dealer trick was to blow it out w/ hydraulic pressure (run engine, turn steering to stop), after removing the dust cap and snap ring. You need a Pitmann arm puller and snap ring pliers ($10 & $15 set Harbor Freight), plus a deep socket to hammer the new seal in. Lower seal kit is ~$10 or full kit ~$25 on rockauto. Your Dart has the early small shaft (1972-) and your Challenger has the big shaft box used on all B, E, C and 1973+ A's.

Personally, I would pull the gear-box since removing the steering linkage is the hardest part. Plus, I like to de-gunk, de-rust, and re-paint everything.
 
Bill - Thank you, I have an Ebody setup already pulled, so i may practice on that one first and see how I do.
 
Im not saying try this. I am only telling a story.

My Valiant leaked p/s fluid. Each time I drove it I had to fill it up. Well a couple of months ago, I wanted to drive it but the p/s was almost dry.

I looked in the garage and I didnt have any p/s fluid or tranny fluid to put in it. I didnt know what I was going to do and then I saw some hydraulic jack fluid. (with leak sealer)

I poured that stuff in there and it is still in there. I havent added any fluid since. LOL
 
That jack oil with sealer probably has about 10X the stuff that makes seals expand, good job! I have filled jacks with power steering fluid too, probably not the best but it has worked since then.
 
I just replaced the one on my input shaft. It was dripping down the box and off the output shaft. To pull the seal, I drilled a 1/16" hole in the outer metal, then screwed in a drywall screw about two turns. A pliers was used to jerk the seal out by the screw head. A crack was found in the 42 year old seal. A long socket was used to drive in the new seal. No leaks.
 
I have a 1967 Dart w/273.
Im having a simular problem with my power steering box leaking at the worm shaft. Where the column connects to box. Pretty bad leak, I am hoping that there is just one seal there to make it a semi easy fix? I know better than to ever say the word EASY. Lol But one would think and hope anyways. Am i wrong on this? I really dont want to remove the entire box if i dont have to,Tho i have an other box if needed.
Might have to try the jack oil with leak stop. sounds pretty reasonable.
 
To replace the upper seal in the car I pull the steering column all the way out.
When the parts are severly worn, replacing the seal only slows the leak.

I've got a leaker too. I tried lucas ps stop leak and that didn't work Guess I'll give jack fluid a shot. It would be soooooo nice to get it to stop leaking. That was the winter project that didn't get done. All the cosmetic stuff did though :)

Thanks for responce RF, Yea i think the rest of it is ok. from what i could tell with the little bit of driving i have done with it. So it is just one seal?
I already have column out, and ready to do this. Lol

Yep, typical little shaft seal.
