175.39mph in my 74 Duster

-
That is extremely cool, I have often thought about putting together a car and going to an scta event on the salt. Funny timing - last night I rented and watched "the worlds fastest indian" for the second time - the movie is based on a true story and worth seeing if you are a gearhead.. Maybe I should change directions with my Barracuda....

I listened to that You Tube several times. Sounds like the motor was a little flat, maybe running a little lean? I know following Landspeed racing the big cubic inch motors need more fuel than the 1/4 mile requires.

135 in my anemic old 74 vette on a Texas back road back when I was a lot younger and dumber. It was flat out. Congrats.

Try this

http://www.landracing.com/ Real good forum for information. forum members are real helpfull.

What I've learned over the past few years is it is better to buy a car already setup for landspeed. Also, attend Speedweek. You'll find the racers are real friendly. Ask a lot of questions.

wow i've been 156 and that was fast, your ride is way cool...cant imagin 175

It was a little flat. Jetting was spot on after reading the plugs. If it wasn't, it would melt running that long. I used to pull timing out in high gear with a timing computer while drag racing and would gain a little bit of mph. On that run in the video i had 6 degrees pulled out for the whole run. It didn't like it. It struggled climbing up through the gears a little. You have to realize the learning curve is steeper than you would expect running this kind of race. I will change something every run trying to find the sweet spot with the combination that I have. Being the first time up there with this car and in this type of race we obtained our goal of 175mph which we were limited to with out further safety equipment.

Kind of odd, after going that fast everything seems slooooooow. Had a big bore sport bike that I was a couple of hundred rpm off the rev limiter in 6th gear a few times out in the open deserts of AZ. Safe to say that the bike with my fat *** on it was done as I pushed it for over half a mile and saw no more rpm....

I've been watching this thread the past few days and something occured to me: I love that cowl hood.

For some reason every other time i see a duster with a cowl hood it looks very nova-ish, but on that car it just fits so well.

Thanks for taking us along. I've been to 135 but not that fast. It was fun. Love the thunder of that wedge. tmm

We built that hood. I wasn't too thrilled about the idea but but the closer it got to being done the more I liked it. We followed the body lines in the hood with the scoop. Widened and lengthened it and changed the shape of it. It took the Chevy look out of the equation(I think). I hate to say it but it was a tad quicker on the dragstrip too.

No doubt you are on the road to enhancing your combo. Lots of experience there for you to tap into. What class did they have you in?

We have discussed making a mold out of that hood and making a new lighter one out of carbon fiber but no plans on producing them to sell.

For the first few seconds I thought he was doing a burnout, then realized the car was moving.

I thought you were doing a burnout at first and I said to myself, wow that has got to be the longest burnout I have ever seen doesn't he know that too much is no good! LOL

It wasn't until I seen some of the horizon go by at the bottom of the window...

nice run
