How do you get it off? Do you need a spanner wrench, or whatever the ones that look like hooks to unscrew the retainer ring? I am stuck with no car....TRied to tap on ribs but they just break off.

hahah....they can be a pain.

I used Oil Filter Pliers....or if those are too small, a Large Chisel type punch and a small hammer....and gently tap it to the left <-------counterclockwise, till it gives it up.

You can do it !!!

Yeah, I did it, Harbor Freight 6" rubber strap wrench, $4.99 and you get 2. I think I actually hurt myself getting that **** off....Hammer and punch just chiseled pieces off. There was a piece of crud in the impeller, locking the pump up. Found it when I backflushed the pump. I got a new sock while I was in there. Never again, I hope. $179 for a new pump, F that!

you can buy the fuel pumps off ebay fairly cheap

A bar clamp like a carpenter uses will work too.
If you're planning to put a aftermarket pump in the pump sender assembly you're in for a chore. Good luck with it

OER isn't bad but aftermarket generic won't fit

My son and I have change out pumps more time's than I can count on his 05 SRT neon due to burning the pump up, we just us a large flat head screw driver and a rubber hammer to spin the nut off, finally he thinks that he has found the problem?? he has to run a higher GPM due to larger injectors. with the higher GPM pump they supply a new plug for the pump suppose to help with the draw the pump needs , Will see!!!!

oops i mean 05 damn I getting old

No way the hammer on the tangs would have budged this one. The strap wrench worked great, but I actually tore the rubber down to the kevlar fibers. I mean this was on TIGHT! Whatever, it works now, I could probably drop it in 30 minutes now, but the trick is to jack the passenger side up first and then drain the fuel. I drained level and the tank still has a bunch of sloshing gas that made it difficult to balance when installing it, that and the metal shield hanging up on the exhaust pipe along with the almost impossible to get a driver onto filler hose clamp. But its done. Another stinky job in the books. This tank was a dealer recall replacement tank, first one split at a seam.

Wow I wonder who made the tank back then there were only about 3 major Mfg of plastic tanks, we make plastic gas tanks and a split seam is a huge problem, now we use what they call an E-ring App on the tanks it's molded right in the tank so removing the module is easer. the old mason jar method is long gone for us,

the mason jar rings wern't bad if they wern't overtightened. neon's had plastic tanks from about 1997+ before that the very first ones were metal

dodge trucks had plastic tanks from the early 70's, dodge was smart that way, no rusty gas tanks

I though it would be a great idea to get a plastic EFI tank for my EFI project, one that already has the sump and the pump and vent lines. Any good doners for a early A body? My 65 tank looks like a suitcase with a semi circle tire shape out the top. The Breeze was a low flat design, too big for my 65'.

it's pretty hard to get a tank even close to fit anything other than what the car it was designed for, they design the car and make the tank fit around the open space that's left, most tanks now are design as what we call a sattle bag design they run a module with a secondary pump or a cross over line that runs inside the tank to aux pump. Now back in 97/98 we made a tank call J2/J4 it was in stall in a car that looked very close in a A-body tank, if i remember right that was a Sebring body style, the filler neck was molded right into the gas tank but the filler went out the back and not the side like most A-bodies if you want when I go back to work on Monday I can get the model of car that it was in stalled in
