So I recently replaced my signal light switch on my dart, prior to the new switch both brake lights worked, but after installation Only one worked. The bulbs are brand new, all the lights and signals work, the lights just don't work when I press the brake pedal. I thought I messed up the signal light switch so I was checking everything, and when i was checking I must have shorted something because the done light went out and I blew out fuse number 3, and now both brake lights don't work but signals and lights work. I'll replace the fuse, but what could be causing the problem? I'm really clueless.

In your original statement, all signals (and 4 way) work normally?

But both brake lights don't work?

This trouble would be IN the signal switch

Is it possible that you miswired it? If you switched the wire for the non-working rear lamp to the same side FRONT lamp, you would have "one brake light" LOL in front, and another in the rear

Yup 4 ways and signals work, nothing happens when I hit the brake pedal. And I don't think so, I wired it exactly how it was before, so I don't think the wiring is wrong.

You can check, either probe the signal connector and look for 3 brake light occurrances -- one going in, two coming out, or have someone look at the front of the car when brakes are applied

Of course if the dash indicators work, one of them will be lit with "brake"

This may sound crazy but I had the same issue A while back and it was driving me nuts.
Try holding up just a little bit on the signal lever and hit the brakes to see if both lights work then?

I'll try that tomorrow after I get the new fuse in, I have the steering wheel off and I'm thinking that the signal light switch isn't getting a good connection, I'll pull the lever and see if it lights the brake lights. I hope that works, if not then I really am clueless. But regardless I can't do anything because of the blown fuse. And I can see why it drove you crazy, it's so frustrating when you have electrical problems.

If those things fail check the brake light switch at the brake pedal. You could have shorted it out when you blew the fuse.

I think the black wire is horn and on same circuit as dome. Signal switch assemblies are so flimsy that a bad upper column bearing or other misalignment of parts can interrupt them. I can only suggest you loosen the column mounting bolts and wiggles the whole assembly around a bit. There is a little movement left and right plus slotted mounting allows up and down movement. If you find a sweet spot, draw the thing up evenly by the upper 2, leave the lower for last.

Okay so the new fuse is in, the dome light works and all the lights and signals work. But once again when I press on the brake pedal only the left brake light works, and it turns out that all the flashers work but the right tail lights as well. Bulbs are fine, I checked again. I'm pretty sure the problem is in the signal light switch, because only had this problem after I changed it out. Could it be a faulty switch?

I went through the same stuff when I changed my turn signal switch. One minute the brake lights wouldn't work, next minute the flashers wouldn't work, etc. I bet I pulled that switch out 6 or 8 times before I finally got everything working. I have no clue why.

. Could it be a faulty switch?

Read my earlier post. Access the signal switch connector, and or the kick panel connector for the rear harness and use a test lamp or meter to ID left / right signal. If you have signal power on that line, and do not have brakes on BOTH it's the switch

If all the problems are in the right rear fixture the problem is at that fixture. Good bulb is good but the base of the bulb in the socket needs a chassis ground path. If the inside of the socket is corroded, fixture isn't tight to the body, etc.. it wont work.

Ya but Red it "sounds" like he has normal signal. Maybe this is a misconception, LOL

I agree with above posts. Start simple. Check for power to the switch and out. Check all grounds. Grounds can cause many problems. Make sure the harness running through the column isn't pinched. I've seen this before. All else fails use the car on the drag strip. You only have to go straight. LOL. Good luck. Electrical problems suck.

So I've been fiddling around with the switch again. I have checked everything, there is power to everything, grounds are good, bulbs are good, wires are intact. The problem seems to be the switch, when I put the switch on lightly and push down so that a connection is made, everything works like it should, but when I actually screw it down where is goes only one brake light works again, it seems like the switch doesn't sit in the right place, because when I turn it slightly the lights work, but I can't get it to stay there. Could the switch just be bad? Or is there anyway I can fix my current one to make it work?
