Hey Transmission Gurus,

I need a little help identifying a 727 TorqueFlite Transmission. I think the number stamped into the rail just above the pan on the driver’s side is,
“PK40 9538 5884 8211”. The “P” could be a “B” and the 11th digit could be a "6” instead of an 8.

I found this document on the Web,
http://www.mymopar.com/downloads/transguide.pdf
But I can't seem to correlate any of the numbers above as they're all seven digit numbers. I found a couple other numbers cast into my bell housing that may help with ID. They are "3748102-7" and "4028101".

This transmission was backing up a 360 LA and came out of a 1975 Dodge Sportsman Motorhome. I assume this was the original transmission as it seemed to be unmolested.

Can anyone tell me what I have? Any known problems (other than linkage mods) using this in my A-body?

Thanks,

yeah..your probably need to take a second look at the numbers on the trans..as it does not show up there..

plus most of the 75 yr models are lower numbers...

but for all general purposes...the 727 will fit just fine...

Being it's out of a Motorhome it probably has the short output shaft with a bolt on yoke. Therefore it won't work in a car without disassembling it and installing a car/light truck output shaft and extension housing. If you can post a picture of it, especially showing the extension housing we can at least identify if it's a car type trans. or the RV version.

I have a 1977 Class C motorhome and it has a standard 727....so you never know.

True. They can be either but the majority I've seen were the short shaft version, but they were older motorhomes. When he said it was a motorhome trans. I mentioned the possibility because he may not know the diff. That's why I told him to post a picture.

Don't say that. I've seen some backwoods hillbilly redneck engineerin you'd be proud of. LMAO

Unfortunately I lost my digital camera, so I don't have any pictures to share. However, it does have the long tailshaft (not a bolt-on yolk). I actually dropped the transmission into my Duster, so I'm going by trial and error here. I'm not sure how it's going to perform, but I'll let you all know once I get the car running again. The next hurdle is going to be the shift linkage. I'm going from column shift to floor shift, so I'm sure I'll run into some new challenges there.

Thanks,

Probably like some of the stuff we did when we were kids. LOL

Good deal. Sounds like you got lucky as RV transmissions are heavier duty and shift firmer. Should make a real good trans. for you.

Thanks Fishy,

I'm getting ready to drop the engine in this weekend and when I laid the headers into the engine bay last night, I realized i needed to disconnect the center link and tied rod end just to get the driver's side header in. It's a good thing I don't have the motor in yet as this would have been a real headache otherwise. I'll let you know how it all works once I get everything back together again.

Cheers,
