1970 Swinger 340 Hemi Orange 4 speed

-
Thats good to hear, i think the hardest part will be getting the rocker out since it goes behind some panels, but it should be pretty straight forward.. same goes for the outer wheelwells. I got one of those brair spotweld cutters and a bunch of various different diameter cutters (3/8" 5/16" 1/4") I got the 1/4" cutters because i plan on separating the the hood skin. My Dewalt drill has 3 speed settings so hopefully it works (500rpm) i have an air drill but it's just to noisy, especially with the amount of spotwelds i have to cut! So that autoset works pretty good?

Cool, mine it sept 22, 1969. was just checking to see if theres any on here that were built the same day.

We are in the lower mainland. Will post some pics (may do a mini build thread as I am in the midst of getting my plum car one the road)

My friends car was built on the same day as yours, what's your order number? Early cars you guys have!

I still don't think 70 340 Swingers came with painted rims & dog dish. Red stripes I am assuming you are thinking? Also 340 wheels (steelies) came with the Goodyear Polyglas E70 14s. I will start a thread & pose the question & ask for original pics and or documentation on it. There is lots of Swingers around these parts with steelies (body color & red stripes) and they do look fine & it is YOUR CAR! Options like you say are nice to have & is a easy swap!

That's neat! Mine is C03528. Is that the hemi orange one? I wonder how far apart our cars were on the assemble line. Any pics?

70 340 swingers were available with painted wheels and dog dish caps...I have had a few over the years ! But, redlines were not available after 69.

Did you, or do you still have records of build sheets that had them? (don't see the code for the red stripes) Someone posted a link with avail options/codes, think they are pre production as the codes are off & no centers on the rallys & the Goodyears say "Polyglas GT" not "Polyglas E70 14"
There was a color keyed 340 wheel & Polyglas in my truck of my FC7 car, no hubcap was ever on it though, and it does look super original/date code correct etc...

I'm still not sold on it, but I do appreciate the input (and want more, ideally a orig old pic of some on a dealer lot and or a build sheet with the codes to prove it. Don't wan't to take over HOSwingers thread about it, so I started a thread in general discussion.

He bought it off of a member on here, think that's it in post #15 (looks FE5 in that pic though. He has done a bunch to it since he bought it and will be driving it this year. Don't think we will make it to ALTA with 3:91s though! Order #is totally different (no C at the start. 039723) Possibly a CDN YO7) thing

No progress on the Swinger yet, we've finally got spring here so I can get the car out of the shop and bring it to the other shop and start tearin it down! What a long winter... It's been snowed in the non heated shop all winter! I picked up some pieces. Firewall insulation, kick panel insulation, door strikers and some side seat trim for my bench seat (mine is missing) I'm waiting on some more sheetmetal to come, but its on back order.

Now the fun really starts

Haha yeah! I can't wait. I've been going crazy this winter not having a project.

I just met up with Doug (dougg on this forum) and bought a steering wheel and another trunk lid. I got to see his car and it was beautiful. An original paint 340 4 speed car that's been a racecar practically it's whole life (stroked big block now) Thanks Doug it was nice meeting you. I already bought a trunk a few months ago, but this one is like new with the original paint! And has the correct emblems so I don't have to weld and redrill on my other one (ill sell it) the steering wheel is also like new, just needs a clean up. (My car doesn't have the correct one)

Just picked up a parts car and its getting the sawzall tomorrow... I'm taking the upper cowl and the firewall to inner fender extensions since I need them. (These ones are in great shape) I'm also robbing the front door hinges since they're still tight, I have new pins and busings so ill be rebuilding them anyway, the hinges on my car are beyond repair. I'm sure i'll gets some other decent parts from it before its off to the crusher!

I'm still in collecting parts stage but I have plans to have the car stripped down and a frame jig built for it in the next couple months... Working on getting the shop setup has taken away from tearing it down and working on it, but I have to have the shop 100% before I do so.

I got one of the firewall to inner fender extensions out and beadblasted/etch primered it. Tonight I'm gonna cut out the drivers side one and give it the same treatment, then ill cut the cowl off (I hope the car doesn't fold in half!) I'm surprised AMD doesn't make these extensions... 9 times out of 10 if your inner fenders are rusted, these things are too.

Rebuild the hinges. The bottoms were I pain to do, I had to file them to get the shoulder of the bushings in between the hinges, I think they turned out good and look factory! They're easy to rebuild now, which I don't think I'll have to do in my lifetime. I took them from the four door parts car so they weren't really worn out at all and the springs were like new.

Started pulling the front end apart and have the motor/trans ready to be pulled.. I will have it out this weekend and I plan on stripping her down completely and sending it off to the blaster ASAP while the weather is good (I'm still going to evaporust all the inners where the sandblaster won't get) and then epoxy it and start doing some sheetmetal removal, oh boy do I have my work cut out for me! My goal is still to have all the sheetmetal work done and in paint by approx this time next year.

Beautiful 80's repair job!

Oh I might be getting the build sheet!! The guy I bought it from tracked down some previous owners and one of the owners is supposed to have it.. I'm just waiting to hear back. This will really help me on bringing this car back to the way it left the assemble line, :D

I also know this car VERY well. My Best friend and I bought it out of a storage locker in Okotoks, Alberta. My buddy ended up selling it to another friend of ours, who moved back to P.E.I, and then Dean sold it for him, to YOU ! Glad to see that you are collecting some NICE parts for the RESTO. Jason still has the BUILD SHEET for the car. ( He was saving it for Jeff, from P.E.I ! ) Get a hold of me, and I will give you my Buddy Jason's contact info. Jason Cunningham 403-201-4882

It was nice talking to you today Jason! Thanks again for grabbing the buildsheet and telling me more info on my car. I'll see you this weekend and look forward to seeing your 1970 Swinger!

I'm stumped on that code as well. I hope Joel has more info on that wheel cover

No problem Randy. I am ultra-impressed with the quality of parts you have gathered for your RESTO. We are all glad that you ended up with that 70 340 Swinger. It needs a fair bit of work, but you seem to be up for the task !

Thanks Jason, I can see what it's gonna look like finished and I've got the motivation and professional help when it comes time to replacing all these panels!

Last night my truck got pelted with golf ball and baseball size hail so now I have to deal with that! It looks like the finish of a golf ball.. You'll see it on Saturday. What a piss off, I bought it new a year and a half ago and always parked at the end of Parking lots to avoid dents and scratches (truck was immaculate) and now it looks like I piece of crap. I wish they made sheetmetal like they did 40 years ago! I had some parts for the swinger in the box of my truck and the hail didn't even touch it!

Oh I blasted, epoxied and painted the front bumper brackets and put them aside. I'm gonna need a third bedroom for all these parts!

Following along from the east.
Keep up the good work & hope all can be repaired on the truck.

Dave

Thanks!

What does WHEELS-12, SPARE-12, COLOR-TX9, and WHEEL COVERS-35 mean on a 70 340 Swinger buildsheet ?

With the help of Rocky_JS and Joel with the 340 Swinger registry they figured out my wheel code!

Here is what my car came with and I'm going to put them back on it. They're not the most appealing wheels for a Swinger but they'll be original!

You were right too, Jason. They are the ones from the original advertisement (like in my sig)

I have the same TX9 on mine but have "wheel cover 24" What is that code for? I thought 35 covers were what my car had, but that can't be right. Mine is a 70 340 car, tires it came with are WSW "white side wall" :glasses7:

I would probobly get a set of the original wheel covers, to put aside for originality purposes, but GO WITH WHAT LOOKS GOOD ON THE CAR. Just my 2 cents. And YES, I do believe ( BODY COLOR ) painted steelies and RED CIRCLE dog dishes were CORRECT in 1970. Correct me if I am wrong. Not trying to rattle any cages. Just chillin'.

I think I'll do the rallyes and if I want to do the factory look I can pop the beauty rings off and throw the full factory wheel covers on when I feel like having something different... Gives me both options without changing wheels!

Yes, The factory standard rims on the 1970 Swinger 340 are the painted body colour steelies with the dodge logo and red circle hubcaps. I personally love that look as well!

I got my broadcast sheet with some extra paperwork! It's not in the best condition but there are three build sheets there and between them all I have all the codes. I also got the original quality control papers! Again they are not in great condition but you can see some handwriting on them here and there... Really cool! I also got a roll of masking tape from the assembly line (complete with orange overspray) it looks like they used some of the tape to hold all the paperwork down to the floor and just left it there and threw the carpet over it. (You can see the tape all over the paperwork)

Thanks again Jason! It was nice meeting you today and going for a ride out to Deans in your Swinger! The last time I took a drive in 1970 Swinger 340 was when I was like 8yrs old.

Can anyone help me out with some of these codes?? On the vehicle delivery part what does sold to spec for "7" mean?
