Jury duty

-
Guess I've been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I've been called fourteen times and served on a half-dozen trials, one civil case that lasted three weeks. I was called to serve two week tours three times, and got out of a fourth only because I had finished the last tour two weeks earlier.

During my first call, one woman I talked to was 75 years old and it was the first time she had been called. My wife is 65 and has only been called five or six times, and has never been selected for a jury.

When one judge asked me during voir dire questioning how I enjoyed my previous jury selections, I told him I had seen a lot of law being practiced, but precious little justice being dispensed...I was dismissed. The whole process is a wealth redistribution gimick and lawyer employment program. The sad part is that it's the best system in the world.

FWIW, and from what I saw, drug use accounts for about 80% of trials in superior courts.

Thankfully, I'm now old enough that I don't have to serve again.

It's the least I can do and bear the hardships I may/will encounter to show respect to all the Veterans and the men and ladies serving that have gave me freedom. I may not be able to next time who knows, but I will do my duty and
show respect to our laws our fathers fought for.

Ain't THAT a true statement!!!

yeah after a week and half of serving on a lawyer ambulance chasing lawsuit. That didn't go their way...which I had a large part in changing the jurors minds. The lawyers wanted to talk to me about what happened. Told them I charge 250.00 an hour for my services...how many hours would you like to talk. They declined....they want to talk to me for free...but they don't give away their time.
It was a big waste of time.

I have never done this and was wondering if anyone ells has.
Or is the judge just looking for a drummer-bass player for a party.
All BS aside they want me for two week's.
I will make the time for it and do my part and try to enjoy it.

just wondering 8)

I had it a few years ago. I could've said my major and been excused(defense attorneys typical don't want people with knowledge of the justice system), but i used it as an excuse to get paid and sit on my *** for a day.

I was on a nonsensical case of assault. A kid was shoplifting, an overzealous rent-a-cop gave chase and his foot was run over when the kid drove off. rent-a-cop claimed he "dove out of the way" and told it as though he was in a segal film. His fellow rent-a-cop couldn't even back up the story and just saw the kid pull out and drive off. It was kinda sad and pathetic.

Despite this being an obvious accident, it took us two days to convince the last juror, that the shoplifting was not part of the trial and not a valid reason to send the kid to jail for assault.(as per the judge) :banghead:

^ says it all.

I have never been called for jury duty. Maybe that is because my wife is pretty high profile with the court system since she has worked with them for over 30 years. I am sure since I am involved with friends on the city council, the sheriff is a personal friend and I tell it like it is are other reasons they don't want me too.

Yup. When the shoe is on the other foot, things suddenly are different

The shoe is in the sand, mud and in another country or (like you) on a battle ship... what do they get paid.. ( Sure as heck) not the money I see posted!!! I don't think a price can be put on life ... do you ?
give it up.. you know we should do our part.... way do you show and speak words of not doing your part ? If I did not want to do my part.. what would you say then ??... ...........................if anything .......... I am not pushing, or asking you to do anything you can not do or even asking you to do anything.. but yet you have a negative mind set on this. why? Please fill me in ...I would like to know more of your opinion ...

Mike, What does jurors get paid in Arkansas. Here they get paid $20.00 a day and I think that is a major rip-off.
I have no idea, but if you ask a man or lady in combat I am sure me serving in Jury duty my pay is much better because I return home each day and never in harms way is the way I look at it. JMO and I only have to put my time in maybe 1 time every three years. I hear ya, but I am not in harms way doing my Duty to the country and or state even if I don't agree with there ways..

just doing what I can and if you can good, if not I understand..

I already explained myself. Please do me the courtesy of re-reading my earlier post. In my working years I WAS NOT about to put my financial situation, my house, in jeopardy by getting stuck on a jury. I suspect you've been enjoying a couple of belts. Kindly do not judge me, for I can assure you that you know nothing of my attitude.

If I recall, back in the 80's--90's "up here" "their" idea of compensation for Jury duty was something like 15
bucks a day.

EDIT It's one hell of a lot less than that, I just looked it up PRESENT DAY:
==================================================================================
Compensation

"Jurors shall be paid $10.00 per day of actual court attendance. $5.00 shall be paid for 4 hours or less of actual court attendance."
Salary/Wage Reimbursement

Some places of employment pay regular wages while an individual is serving on jury duty. This is NOT a requirement, however, and the decision to pay wages is entirely up to the business.

Well said and understood sir, I raised my family on my own and had no father or mother by my side to take up slack and a day or three would be a hard ship to me..

Yes you are correct I have had couple belts...

You are welcome.. just me memike being me, I don't expect a thank you from anyone 67Dart273.. expectations are made to be broken, so not a big one to me tonight..

Out here, just few years ago i made $27 for two days of jury duty. I'd be mad, but i have salaried job.

Last time I was called in Texas, it was $5 a day and we were asked to donate it to one of several charities. When I served in WA state, I think it was around $40 and my employer made up the difference.

Serving is important, and everyone should experience it, but so many get out for various and unknown reasons that those who do serve are unfairly burdened.

As an example, in my last county, the legal hispanic population was about 25%, but during my last summons, with over 300 jurors called, there were less than 20 hispanic surnames in the pool, and even fewer with obvious hispanic features. Several of them were excused after talking to the judge. Why not at least 75 in the pool? Other minorities were fairly represented, so I can only assume it was a language issue, but since speaking English is a citizenship requirement, something isn't right. The situation was not fair to non-hispanics who have to fill the juries, and it certainly was not fair to hispanics on trial.

As I said earlier, our judicial system is still the best in the world, but it needs improvement.

I was called to serve on jury duty back in the 80's. It was circuit court and we had to serve for a month. We got paid $5.00 a day and my employer made up the difference. During this time I was impanelled 5 times and and heard for cases. I was foreman on the murder case we heard.

I consider it an honor to serve my communtiy and country in this manner. If you had to go to trial who would you want sitting to hear the evidence and determining your innocence or guilt?
