While doing my initial inspection on a pair of Moroso gold valve covers this evening ...

I was shocked to turn them upside down and see this.

Yep, little flaps of metal on the inside that weren't fully cut away when it was stamped ...

Especially since these valve covers were designed for race applications, this is disturbing to say the least. Since it was on BOTH of them in exactly the same spot too, that leads me to believe these aren't the only ones out there with this defect. If you own a pair of these valve covers, I'd pull them off and have a look.

The little tab will just come off with a few bends back and forth, which is a good thing when you go to remove it ... but it could also be a terrible thing if it falls off on its own the next time you're adding a quart of oil.

Beware FABO members! Share this with your friends if they happen to have a pair of these under the hood.

First off, I have no excuse for the little tab. The tool must have had a nick and some got done like that and we missed them. Although we try hard to be perfect, we are not.

However, We have not gold anodized valve covers since 2008. That means these are at least five years old, and look like they have served their previous owners well. They look like they have had a fairly hard life, but are still good enough for you to be replating.

We do not have any valve covers in stock that have this issue. And I guarantee there are no new sets in the field that do either.

I am glad you caught it and it won’t be a future issue for your customer.

Lastly, since we are “friends” on facebook, and facebook is how you let me know about it, it would have been polite to just send me a private message or email before you posted this on “every Mopar page I’m on”. I could have assured you this is not an existing or ongoing issue.

If you would, please let me know what other forums you have posted on so I may respond to those also.

Rick, I appreciate you stepping up with your reply, and I'm sure everyone else does too.

Though you suggest it would have been polite to have advised you of this privately, I believe the public service aspect totally outweighed any personal embarrassment to the company that might have been caused ... especially since my reputation in the industry is as a parts restorer rather than a parts seller. The fact they're no longer even made makes my announcement even more important because as time goes on, more and more people are going to want to get them restored just like they do with HP273 Commandos.

Would you be able to contact every purchaser who might still have a set of these valve covers, or be able to track down individuals who may have purchased them used? Neither do I ... so I chose what I saw to be the best, fastest and most widespread alert to the people who it might impact. If I was wrong then I was wrong, and I apologize to Moroso for it, but I still think the needs of the many outweighed the needs of the one.

I'm glad I caught it too. It's not the first time either -- ask RumbleFish360 about his brand new Permacool oil filter relocation kit for instance, or those countless Magnum valve cover owners who found loose baffle screws like I did -- and in my business I seriously doubt it will be the last. The way I see it, I am the 'last line of defense,' and once my guys put my restorations on their motor I want them to continue to rest assured that everything will be right.

As I replied to Aaron on your post on facebook, all I asked is if you could have contacted me first. Then you could have posted the pictures publicly. I don't disagree that this should be public, but it should have started privately. Like I said, I should not really even need to be posting. You could have gotten the info from me and posted it with your pics, and warned everybody correctly instead of the way you did.

Regardless of whether these are new production pieces or not is beside the point. The defect exists and people need to be aware of it if they own a pair.

You might disagree, but I think it's better they find out now this way instead of at the machine shop after damage has already been done .........

Now we both have work to attend to. I'm off to do mine.
 
Nothing wrong with what you did Leanna.

The horse was already out of the barn. I'll have to look at the pair I have still in the box.

It a great reminder to ALWAYS inspect the parts you install on your vehicle for defects.

I'm one of those owners that bought a pair of brand new Moroso gold-anodized valve covers via the online aftermarket that Speed Merchant never would have been able to track down. I bought them via eBay a year or so ago. They're still in the original packaging so I'll have to check them out to see if they've got the "dangling tab".
I had the gold-anodized Moroso covers years ago on the 340 race motor in my previous '69 Dart and always liked the look. I bought the ones I have now so I can change the look of the 360 in my current '69 Dart. I also have the polished Cal Custom valve covers that were on my old 340 and the polished Mopar finned covers you beautifully PCd for me.

Curious - do you have a powder that closely resembles the gold-anodized finish of the Moroso covers?
I'm still searching for a primo gold-anodized Moroso air filter and can't seem to find one anywhere.
Don't mean to hijack your thread, but others may want to know as well to get their older Moroso products refreshed.
 
Rob and Ken, thanks for your support and for realizing my Public Service Announcement was for the greater good. It was only done because I want to take care of my friends in the hotrod community the best way I can, and that goes well beyond just my customers. I was one of you enthusiast restorers wayyyyyy before I ever became a business owner, and know a problem can't be fixed if I don't know about it.

Ken, I can get "anodized" appearing powders but after trying one earlier this year (a dark blue), I'm really not too keen on it. The results were kind of streaky and uneven. I don't know if you ever peeked under my hood or not but I've got a rainbow going in there (I devote more time to my boys than to my own car lol), including a rather nice gold anodized air cleaner. Let me look it over again and if it's suitable for your ride, maybe we can make a deal on it. It was one of my planned "some day" changes anyhow, and if you can use it then all the better.
 
Thanks Leanna, you did the right thing, yet again. It's good that we can always depend on you.

If Moroso made as much stuff for Mopar as they do chebbie or phord, I think maybe they would have a little ***** room. Not only have they never made HALF the stuff for us that they do chebbie or phord, but they've STOPPED makin a lot of Mopar stuff. Far as I'm concerned, they can stuff it.
 
I don't understand why Rick seems upset about you letting us all know about this. You very well may have saved one of us a lot of money. I have a set of small block covers that I got with a 340 I bought years ago. I will have to take a look at them tomorrow. The ones in the pics are big block aren't they? Good job Lenna, I find it funny, that a company would send out products that have a obvious defect, then have a problem with someone pointing out a fact...... I guess the truth hurts, and the truth is, they sold lots of valve covers with a problem.......... What was they gonna do, have a recall??? Nope:wack:
 
good warning Leanne .....that could save someone some headache ....especially since those are very cool valve covers and im sure a lot of people use them. in fact I am tempted myself ...the gold color give a nice vintage look.

but either way .....thanks for the warning .....I can see where that could be easily missed by some people .....probably me.

Agreed.

It was an obvious friendly heads-up to all the members who may have a pair of the valve covers in question and didn't notice if there was that tab or not. So that they can run out and pull their valve covers to see if it is indeed there, wasn't there, or if they need to check the inside of the engine.

Better to be safe than sorry, especially over something so trivial as a little piece of stray metal that could lead to damage.
 
I'm happy to see that the public written support is finally evening up with the private stuff in my in box. It's appreciated ya'll.

After thinking about it a bit more ...

I bill at $25/hour across the board. I have to confess to everybody that I do this work more for the love of the CARS than the money ... so my price is low and the attention to detail is very high. I care a lot about what I do. I want my work to last for another 50 years, so I do everything in my power to preserve these pieces of car **** history. And if someone down the road can enjoy it and love it even half as much as I do when it leaves my hands, then I'm doing my job right.

I suspect at some point in every company's past someone felt about it the exact same way that I feel about my work and my own company. Sadly those days are apparently more behind than in front of us.

I have no doubt there are thousands of these valve covers sitting at swap meets, on shelves in garages, and on motors all over the world.

Rather than become defensive about this problem Rick, why not turn it around and use it for something completely positive and profitable instead???

This can be a golden customer service opportunity for you. Just an idea here ... Send everyone on your mailing list a brief announcement that the problem was recently brought to the company's attention, circulate flyers at all the major shows, take out ads in magazines, whatever Moroso usually does ...... except accompany it with a serious year-long sale on valve cover gaskets.

It will be an indirect form of apology, give everybody an opportunity to learn about the 'hanging chad' and have a chance to investigate economically at their own pace. The company will come out smelling like a rose for your timely attention to customer service, and you'd totally be the Good Guys for bringing it to the customers' attention by mail or some other typical form of advertising announcement.

And I have the feeling an awful lot of people may be needing valve cover gaskets after this. You'd probably sell a $hitload of 'em ... people would stock up just because the price was so amazing.

Anyway, I still stand behind what I see as merely a public service announcement to my friends in the hobby. Whether I was just some Jill Blow off the street (you know, Joe's sister lol) who happened to notice a problem or a business owner / site Vendor myself is immaterial. The post could have come from anybody at any time about any manner of subject, and regular forum members know this. The fact remains that there's a defect in the parts that people need to know about ... and if there's a defect there then it goes to follow that there may be defects elsewhere in parts that are sold to the automotive community without a thorough inspection.

Rick, I was honestly a bit surprised by the part of your reply where you reiterated that I should have alerted you privately first. What would you have done differently? Please remember, whatever you initially planned to do after finding out about the metal shard can still be done now.

I can't tell if your response shows that you were offended altogether, or rather felt that you had to waste your time addressing the post with corrections about your current stock. Taking that logic one more step backward, the way I see things is honestly kind of harsh but abundantly true: If Moroso had done their job right in the first place and performed decent Quality Control at the factory to eliminate the hanging chad, I could've been in my shop working instead of using my time to tell people about it.

We are both in the hotrod business and have been, your company much longer than mine and each with its own sterling reputation. We need to support each other here. As industry professionals, we all need to perform our duty to our customers and to the hobby at large to make sure they go fast, look good doing it, and DO IT SAFELY ALONG THE WAY.

In closing, the main reason I didn't write to you privately through FaceBook and used a tag instead was because I've written to you twice privately before (albeit about different subjects than this). You never responded to either one of them.

The last thing I want to do is create an enemy. I'm just trying to serve my favorite hobby in the best way I know how.
 
We caint have somebody comin here and knockin our best girl around. Especially with his first two posts. He made it obvious that was the reason for joining here then went on to say he was gonna follow you around and discredit you on the other forums.

This is one white boy done with Moroso.
 
I don't want to upset anyone here but...I see Ricks response differently. He admits to the flaw and apologizes and I think all he was asking was to be in on telling everyone. Leanne I have nothing but the highest appreciation for you. I think you are the Queen of FABO and would love to meet you someday. And I say this in fear because I do not want to offend anyone on here especially not you or your massive following. But... What if I would have posted something you would have done to show the Mopar world a flaw in your work. And all at once you see your product being criticized in public without your knowledge. Would you have not wanted me to contact you first? And then we could talk and do it together or at least you would have a heads up on any damage it could have done to your spotless reputation. I am glad you brought it to everyones attention and feel you did nothing wrong. I think Rick was asking to have had the opportunity to let it be known with his knowledge so he could be ready for damage control. I hope I have not offended anyone on here I love this site and the people who post are the best. But I had put my 2 cents in here.
 
If anybody has the old Direct Connection, blue anodized, stamped aluminum valve covers, you should check them also. Moroso made them for Direct Connection.

Why are you so concerned that she didn't warn you that she was going to post the pictures. You should have known that when it was first posted on Facebook.

The way I see it is if YOU let the defect get out of your company, then it is fair game for public forum. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS TO PROTECT YOUR COSTOMERS???

Why was this defect not caught at your manufacturing facility? There should have been some sort of error proofing or inspection for this (or both) to make sure that it did not get out of your factory.

When you set up your tooling for making the part, why didn't you put an inspection or poke yoke to detect this and protect this from getting to your customers? Your company has made many parts, and should know how to protect for this. When you set up your tooling for making the part, why didn't you evaluate what could go wrong with that punch (that made the hole), and make sure that it didn't get out.

Or did your employees see the defect and bring it to "management" attention, and they just told them to "run it anyway"????

Did the punch get worn and you just did not want to take the time to change it and kept running them anyway (profit before quality)???


Why wasn't this caught in final inspection before packing/shipping?

Now you are attacking Leanna for letting us know about it. She's doing the right thing warning us about this so we can fix it before it does harm to our engines.

Why are you so upset that she told us? Were you just planning on ignoring it and let it destroy someone's engine? It seems like you are more concerned with getting egg on your face than protecting your customers.

You know damn well, that if you shipped these to one of the OEM manufacturers, their Supplier Quality would be up your a$$ making you come in and sort all stock for the defect, establishing a clean point, and quarantining all of the defective stock and shipping it back to you to correct/scrap. Not to mention a hit on your quality rating that if a couple more happen will affect you getting future business from that company. We as aftermarket individual customers don't have that kind of authority.... So many companies ship their crap to the part stores for us to deal with...

Maybe you should hire Leanna as she did a better job of catching this than everyone who worked for you and handled this part and did not catch it....

You should not get mad at Leanna for trying to protect us. She has a right to let us know about issues she feels are important for us to know. If you didn't want this to get out, then you should have contained it between the four walls of the factory that made the junk.... Once you ship it to the public, it is fair game to spread the word. If you did your job properly, you wouldn't have to deal with this.

So, what are YOU going to do to protect your customers from this breaking off in their engines and causing damage? How did this get out of your factory without getting caught? What error proofing or inspection was in place to catch this?

Don't blame Leanna for exposing your problems. You should have not let that get out in the first place....

Your points are all very well taken dartnabout. I invite not only my customers but everyone else to share comments, questions and feedback regularly whether it's good or otherwise. If the day ever comes when there's a flaw -- especially if it's something that can cause catastrophic engine damage -- I'd definitely want to know about it regardless of whether it was firsthand or after the fact. Again, no one can fix a problem unless they know it exists. Thanks for sharing your thoughts guys!!! :D
 
I swore off Moroso junk when my Moroso oil accumulator blew its top in my freshly painted engine bay... what a huge mess!!!
It was a poor design and was delivered with NO instructions about mounting points (or anything else) which I think may have contributed to the failure.
I replaced it with the real-deal, an Accusump.
