1967 383 Formula-s

-
I got most of the fuel system buttoned up - new tank, sender, grommet and beaded the strap and painted it. I installed and new shocks while I was there.

I rebuilt the carb the correct 4299s and the tag is still there. I put it to the factory calibration - jets and rods. Fuel lines bent and installed.

I did a barter deal with a friend for the 67 a-body 383 air cleaner.

All kick down linkage beaded, lubed and installed.

Congrats John on scoring the wife, the car and the work you are doing! Did I read right that you blasted the fuse box/panel and the connector ends?? Keeup us posted bud!

Yes you read it right Steve. I drop the pressure a little bit but beading cleans it a lot better than hitting it with wet n dry sand paper. It does clean well and gets into all the areas you couldn't get otherwise. I had tested it before using a parts harness I have and I get into every connector to remove the corrosion and everything else in there. =)

finished detailing the bezel, a couple touch ups left, then install the lenses and put the cluster together and get the dash/frame back in the car.

while installing the new engine/lighting harness I found a heat shield I had never seen before. It appears it is to protect the brake proportioning valve from exhaust heat. It must be a 383 thing but even with that I have had a few in the past that didn't have this..? Factory or home made? I cleaned it up, painted and re-installed it.

It was factory installed on 383 cars. Most seem to have been removed.

Accurate repops them.

This is pic of one installed.

Nice score! That paint looks a little to good to be using the car as a work bench are you going to repaint it?

Thanks, that one looks a bit easier to get too! =)

stuff is just "carefully" sitting on it and keeping it separated from other cars/parts.
Yeah normally when I buy these things the paint is, if existent, thrashed. It is kind of nice that the first thing I don't have to do is paint. The paint is ok a 5 footer but consider it is 30+ years old.

Probably why once they were removed for whatever reason they just got trashed. I would suspect the 69 440 cars had them as well.

Nice find by the way!!!!

Hey what paint did you use for that dash cluster? I'll be having to do mine here soon and yours looks good!

the frame was blasted and powder coated, with a no glare black almost a semi-flat and has a slight texture.
can - duplicolor chrome on the bezel
can - semi flat on the black parts
I had an argent made a touch darker then factory mixed and put into a can. I had to buy 6 cans and had a little left for airbrushing. I just started on my last can, but mopar argent would work also. I like the darker as it doesn't look dirty so easily.
I wipe with wax and grease remover then use 400 for any rough areas then a red scotchbrite pad to lightly scuff the rest.
I spray light coats and give a couple days after applying the chrome to the whole bezel first. then a day for each additional color. Do it in a warm area maybe with a heat lamp nearby.
I do not use primer or adhesion promoter and one that I did 2 years ago has no issues at all.

it does not have that real "chrome" vacuume metalized look, but it looks clean and tidy and has a duller chrome reflective quality. Not much of the "chrome" is really visible once installed. I use a thin brush and q-tip for the fine details details.

Hope this helps...

So are the caps or the "rubbers" new?? Caps look nice! Dad has his orig set, but the holes for the lugnuts have been hogged out a bit.

The caps are the factory ones from the black car and added new rubbers also. The tires that were on it were coded 1978 lol.
I need to find long lug nuts that will work without giving my left nut for them. Funny thing is I have 5 left hand thread.

Awesome, thanks a lot Rocky. I want to try this on mine before shelling out the big $$$ for the real chrome look.

The damn lighting in the garage. I cant stand stand still enough, long enough, I'll get some better ones today in the light.

There's a guy not far from me that's getting one of those "Spray-Chrome" setups soon. I talked to him about doing the dash bezels for my Dart. He says he can do them, and it'll be MUCH cheaper than the vacuum metallizing procedure. I have a "junk" bezel I was going to give him, early in the new year, to try his system on before I give him my "good" set to do!

I'll keep y'all posted on the results.

Very cool. Great car grabbed by someone who knows what to do with it. This was my original SoCal hotrod from 67-69. Mine was copper bronze, white/black interior. Been looking for another one I could afford ever since.
We ran an Isky 300, hooker fenderwells, 4.56 gears with cheater slicks and a Holley 3310 - all stuff I wouldn't do today but that thing was terrifically fast. Rarely lost a street race, also wouldn't do that today either. Raced at the old Orange County Intl Raceway (OCIR) typically dialed in from 12.90 to 13.10 - no kidding. Small numbers now a days but pretty good back then for a 15 sec car off the showroom floor. Chrysler had a great idea but the motors just couldn't breathe in stock condition. Really brings back the memories. Great catch. :salute:

Darwin, I was looking at doing the same thing as the guy out your way with the "spray on chrome". All the product needed for the "spray" was coming out of the US, so it wasnt cost efficient for me. But let us know how it works.

John helped me with some pointers on my dash. Mine didnt turn out near what his did...guess I aint a good listener like I thought...:violent1:

Keep up the great work John!
