what about a 413

-
I believe 413 cranks have a higher nickle content and thus are deemed to be stronger than other big block cranks! Many 413 motors were used in industrial applications, so check to make sure it has a passenger vehicle rear crank register before buying it, or you'll have yourself a mighty fine boat anchor!! Geof

Is that about the flywheel/flexplate bolt hole pattern on a 413? I heard bout there being an issue with that.

The 413 is a good engine, I would just run it with the closed a chambered head it was designed for. 915's with a good cam will really wake that engine up. it is already 10:.1. A good dual plane aluminum Intake and AFB carb, and TTI's will turn it into a great engine.

This thread got my attention because I almost picked up a 413 on Saturday. It was supposed to be out of a mid '70s RV and included its 727. I didn't even know they made a 413 RV engine. I can get a 440 out of a mid '70s RV, a BB 727, and a Dana 60 housing for $250 more than the 413. I passed on this. Does it sound like a deal? I don't NEED the 413 or the 440 since I've got a '74 440 and 727 out of a C body I'm not using right now. But you can never have too many BB engines floating around, can you?

Be sure you check them out before buying. There are some odd configurations that make some of them unsuitable for passenger car use.
I had a 1970 motor home with a 413. These are very low compression as they are designed to run on regular fuel. I think mine has something like 265 hp on the breather. Mine has the weird water pump setup that fed directly into the heads. It also has a short tail shaft trans with an emergency brake setup on it.
I've also had a couple of 440s that came out of motor homes. Both of these had conventional water pump setups but had short tail shaft trans. I heard the trans had an extra clutch pack or something that made them beefier.

I agree with that, I got mine from a 63 Chrysler, so it was ready to go. The engine I favor is from an actual car between 59'- 66. Then the 440 started to show up.

I've got my eye on a '64 Chrysler New Yorker with a 413 in it. I assume it will have the 6 bolt flywheel/flexplate bolt hole pattern on the crank.

Anything else I should pull from this car since it's all there?

8 3/4. Early C-body rear ends like that are the PERFECT canidate to be narrowed down as they also have non tapered axles that can be shortened and resplined. Also, IIRC, big drums.

If you really want to be different get a 351 firepower hemi and drop in your dart. That'd be unique

4 Planetary gears in the back instead of three. :burnout:

No disagreement here that a 440 will produce more power than a 413. That said, I suggest use whet you've got. If you find yourself losing to 440 equipped cars in the future, you can revisit the issue then. Enjoy what you've got while you've got it.

Grab the BB push button trans, they're worth some $$!! You may also find that the rear has a SG, not uncommon in the big C bodies!! Oops, my secret is out!! Geof

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I couldn't remember exactly what I was told about them.

Very true! The 68-79 superbee and roadrunner transmissions, as well as all 440HP and hemi's those years had the four planetary gears, rear, with eight total. When you find them, you should buy them. I found even my 77' Cordoba has that, as it came with the optional towing package. So Chrysler did some very interesting things in the day.

Any #s or markings to tell if it has four planetary gears? A RV short tailshaft 727 can be changed to a long tailshaft how? Thanks for all of the great information

I don't think a 413 cross ram built right is a cheap motor. Shroud valves? do you build engines with whatever parts you find,Build it right the 413 still is a great motor and still used on the street and track today for the bullet proof block.

You asked for opinions. I gave mine. If you just wanted people to say yes to your opinion, you should have said so.

The push button tranny is there! Haha. What's it worth?

It's a 742 rear end. Can't move the wheels so can't verify the sure grip. But does have small bolt pattern.

You'll get a couple hundred bucks just as a core for the BB push button! Now, if you could find a small block push button trans from a 65 B body, you could put that tail shaft on the BB trans, and end up with a BB pushbutton trans with a slip joint tail shaft!! That's $1000-$1500, depending on how its built! See, Chrysler never made the tail shaft of the BB pushbuttons with a U-joint, and only the 65 smallblock B body has one! Yes, they're rare, but I happened upon one in a 65 coronet 4 door 273 car, tipped up on its side in the scrapyard....$75 for the whole trans!! Put it in my 64 Belvedere!!

Max wedge, Hemi SS and nostalgia owners would die to have that setup!! And they are willing to pay the $$ to get one!!
